Scarlets player ratings as talented teenager runs show against superstar

The Scarlets went down to defeat in Cape Town but a number of players stood out

The Scarlets were desperately unlucky to end up with just one bonus point, after losing a 14-try thriller against the Stormers in Cape Town.

Here's how the players rated...

15. Ioan Nicholas - 8

Brilliant performance at full-back. Cut a lovely line in the build-up to Ioan Jones' score. Very elusive, setting up Page's score. Beat a host of defenders on the day.

14. Ioan Jones - 8

Little he could do for the Stormers' first score. Brushed himself off to set up Roberts' try. Then a brilliant finish out wide, stepping around one before diving over acrobatically.

Lively throughout and only denied a second by a forward pass.

13. Joe Roberts - 9

Obviously, the hat-trick will grab the headlines, but there's just so much to like about Roberts' game. Very good on both sides of the ball.

12. Joe Hawkins - 7

Loose pull-back pass turned a gilt-edge scoring chance into a Stormers counter that would become their second score. Redeemed himself moments later, helping to create his midfield partner's score.

11. Macs Page - 8

In the week he was overlooked by Wales, this was a very strong response. Just full of confidence. Such a shame to see him injured nearly scoring his second.

10. Carwyn Leggatt-Jones - 8

The teenager was a dangerous running threat, while he kicked well. Up against one of the rising stars of world rugby, he was far from awed - running the show.

The 50:22 in the last 10 minutes was, quite frankly, a joke.

9. Dane Blacker - 7

One loose pass straight into touch, but otherwise the scrum-half was very good throughout.

1. Kemsley Mathias - 5

Scrum penalty against him early on. Willing carrier, though.

2. John McKee - 6

Sent to the sin-bin early on after going off his feet at the breakdown. Proved costly initially, but he throws himself into everything.

3. Harri O'Connor - 5

Like his colleague on the other side of the scrum, the scrum was an issue.

4. Alex Groves - 6

Decent work-load by the lock, if nothing overly eye-catching.

5. Sam Lousi - 7

Nice early choke tackle and intercept in the first-half. Just a classy player who reads the game so well.

6. Taine Plumtree - 7

Showed off his athleticism well in places, but it's often paired with just being a little too loose. But still got through a load of work.

7. Josh Macleod - 7

The captain's strong start to the season continued. Not as many breakdown opportunities today, but a shedload of tackles and a well-taken try.

8. Fletcher Anderson - 8

As always, a big performance on both sides of the ball by the No. 8. Regular as clockwork.

16. George Roberts - 6

Solid enough cameos by the replacement hooker.

17. Sam O'Connor - 6

Delightful lofted pass for Macleod's pass. Front-row union membership revoked as a result.

18. Gabe Hawley - 6

One lovely mazy carry down the right wing. Another one left sweating on his place in the front-row union as such.

19. Harvey Cuckson - 7

Big intervention to hold up the ball over his own line nine minutes from time.

20. Dan Davis - 6

Spent his time on the pitch defending his own line.

21. Archie Hughes - 7

Looked lively off the bench, with the Scarlets continuing to take the game to the home side.

22. Gareth Anscombe - N/A

On for the final five minutes. Not enough time to make an impact.

23. Isaac Murray-MacGregor - 6

Perhaps overcommitted in defence for the winning score, but there was little the debutant could do at that stage.
