Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has been putting on a show through the first quarter of the NFL season, making plays that few QBs can pull off. But for every highlight-reel moment, there have been a few head-scratching mistakes.

Allen has racked up 15 total touchdowns this season, but he’s also coughed up the ball five times. His playmaking prowess has been a major reason behind Buffalo’s 4-1 start, but NFL fans believe the Bills superstar is getting off too easy for his costly turnovers.

Why Josh Allen Gets Away With More

The Buffalo Bills are off to a 4-1 start and are coming off a statement win over the Los Angeles Rams. But as the Bills keep stacking wins, Josh Allen’s all-too-familiar turnover problem continues to rear its ugly head.

The bigger question, though, is whether Allen gets a different rulebook when it comes to criticism. While rival quarterbacks are branded overrated or have their games reduced to their rushing ability, the Bills superstar gets celebrated for his dual-threat brilliance and often gets a pass for his costly mistakes, with his supporting cast frequently entering the conversation.

More so, the Bills also were against the Eagles’ famous tush-push and voted to ban it in the NFL, but in 2025, Josh Allen was one of the quarterbacks who used the tush-push the most.

To his credit, Allen has never shied away from owning his mistakes. The four-time MVP contender has often been his own harshest critic, taking accountability when things go sideways. But that hasn’t stopped the turnovers from becoming a recurring storyline.

Take Buffalo’s Week 3 clash with the Los Angeles Chargers. Allen threw two interceptions and lost a fumble as the Bills coughed up the ball five times. Buffalo still escaped with a 24-16 win, but its defense had to step up to prevent those giveaways from turning into a late-game meltdown.

The following week, Allen’s turnover bug bit again in a 29-26 loss to the New England Patriots. Trailing by three with 1:14 left on the clock, Allen escaped pressure and launched a deep ball toward Josh Palmer, only for safety Craig Woodson to come down with the game-sealing interception. Allen admitted afterward that he should have thrown the ball away.

Of course, there’s another side to the story. Allen’s gunslinger mentality and off-script magic are precisely what make him one of the NFL’s most dangerous quarterbacks.

In Buffalo’s wild 37-34 overtime win over the Rams, Allen racked up 331 total yards and two touchdowns, including a rushing score, despite throwing an interception. His ability to turn a busted play into a back-breaking gain helped the Bills pull off the comeback.

And that’s the Josh Allen conundrum. The same improvisational flair that makes him a nightmare for opposing defenses can also put Buffalo in a hole when he tries to play hero ball. His aggressive style is a weapon, but it can become a liability when he forces throws into coverage.

That’s the double-standard debate Carter is putting under the microscope: Are Allen’s mistakes judged by the same standards as those of other NFL quarterbacks, or does his superstar status buy him extra leeway?

For the Bills, the answer on the field is straightforward. Allen doesn’t need to stop taking risks or dial back the playmaking that makes him special. He just needs to pick his spots better and protect the football. Because in a league where every possession matters, even an elite quarterback can’t afford to keep giving defenses extra chances.
