It was a long time coming for the striker, who said he has spent time crying on the phone to his loved ones over the pressure he feels to find the net.
After Saturday’s emphatic 5-1 win at home to Inverness, he commented: “Almost every day, I wake up and feel terrible about myself. I call my family at home, I don’t know why I’m not scoring.
“They are already calling me. I cry to them every day, I told them ‘I don’t know why, I’m doing my best but the goal does not come’, but finally it came today, so I’m very happy.
“Every time we have a game, they watch it. Even my junior sister said, ‘don’t worry, believe in yourself.’”
Athletic trailed by one at half time after conceding an early penalty that was stuck away by Alfie Bavidge.
Adams explained that he thought it was a “good response from the coach when we went to the dressing room”.
He added: “Instead of yelling at us, he told us, ‘You are going to do it’.”
Just two minutes after the teams re-emerged, the scorer’s housemate, Allan Oyirwoth, delivered a perfect cross from the left wing. Adams leaped up at the back post to equalise, leading to wild celebrations in the home end.
“He said I’m going to pay him for the assist,” laughed Adams. “I need to cook for him, he’s one of the people who challenge me.
“Everyone said, ‘Adams does not score, Adams does not do this’, now I score.”
Discussing the squad’s post-match reaction, he said: “You wouldn’t believe what happened in the dressing room if I told you.
“They are very happy for me because they really wanted me to score.”
He went on to state he has been given “a lot of confidence” by the conversion.
“I just have to work from here because now I have a job to do,” said Adams. “One goal does not say I’m the best, I have to challenge myself for more.”
Another person who was delighted to see it go in was the child who received his match-worn shirt at full-time.
The forward explained: “Every game, he brings a Nigerian flag to cheer me up. I used to see him but because I didn’t score, I wasn’t happy to approach him. Today I was happy to give him my jersey.”
