Shane Steichen is facing growing frustration from part of the Indianapolis Colts fan base. Sunday’s 16-10 loss to the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium dropped Indianapolis to 2-5 and extended its losing streak to three games.
After the game, Steichen stuck with Daniel Jones at quarterback, and several fans called for the head coach to be fired.
Asked after the game whether a quarterback change could be coming, Steichen answered: “No, I have not thought about a quarterback change.”
The question came after a quiet afternoon for Jones. Playing without tight end Tyler Warren and wide receiver Alec Pierce, he completed 13 of 22 passes for 108 yards with no touchdowns and was sacked four times.
The loss and Steichen’s postgame stance didn’t sit well with some fans. One fan offered a blunt forecast: “He’s going to get fired or a story will come out about mutually parting ways. There’s no middle ground here.”
The Vikings went ahead on Kyler Murray’s 5-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson early in the fourth quarter. Will Reichard’s 52-yard field goal then made it a six-point game with 1:39 left.
The Colts got the ball back at their own 33 with one timeout, and Harrison Smith intercepted a pressured Jones on the second play of the drive. Through Week 7, Jones has seven interceptions and four touchdown passes.
Coming into Week 7, the Vikings had allowed a league-best 12.2 points per game. The Colts ran for 154 yards, 95 of them by Jonathan Taylor. They were held scoreless after halftime, though, as Spencer Shrader, who had made 22 straight field goals, missed from 56 and 48 yards.
In milder terms, another fan suggested the Colts “should consider a coaching change then.”
Another fan took aim at the head coach more directly: “Just a reminder that our HC is also actively sabotaging this team.”
Two more fans wanted Steichen gone right away, with one writing that he “needs to be fired rn (right now).”
The other fan wrote: “This is why @cirsay should fire him IMMEDIATELY!”
One fan zeroed in on the quarterback decision itself, the same one Steichen was asked about after the game, writing that “Shane Steichen has an unhealthy obsession with Daniel Jones/hate for Anthony Richardson.”
Jones currently has a PFN QB Impact Grade of 63.1, ranking 33rd in the league. Only Justin Herbert (60.4) has a worse grade than the Colts quarterback in the league.
Anthony Richardson Sr. is on the Colts’ active roster at quarterback. Even so, the team kept Jones as its starter after a Week 6 loss to the Tennessee Titans on October 18. Steichen repeated after Sunday’s game that he has “a ton of faith in” Jones.
Another fan put coach and quarterback in the same sentence: “This has to be it for Shane Steichen and Daniel Jones.”
The quarterback didn’t sugarcoat his own part in the loss: “It’s my job to play well and put the team in position to win games … I got to do a better job of that, and I certainly understand that. I think we all got to go back to work. I got to go back to work and see where I can be better.”
The Colts are third in the AFC South, behind the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. They play the Jaguars at EverBank Stadium on November 1.
