We can beat anybody, says Posh boss Savage

Peterborough United boss Robbie Savage says his side "can beat anybody" as they prepare to face fellow League One club Bradford City in the last-16 tie of the Carabao Cup.

Savage signed a "long-term" contract with Posh following his departure from National League club Forest Green Rovers earlier this month.

The former Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers and Wales international midfielder has made a bright start to his time at London Road, losing just one of his first five matches in charge in all competitions.

The highlight of his stint so far came in a 3-1 win at former club Leicester in his first league game, during which Peterborough ran into a three-goal lead at half-time.

Having swept aside Championship side Watford 5-1 earlier in the League Cup under former boss Luke Williams, Posh have the opportunity to make the quarter-finals for the first time in 35 years when they travel to Bradford on Tuesday.

Posh go into the tie as underdogs against a Bradford side which have not conceded a goal in almost eight hours of football in all competitions.

"The lads are a great group, it's been an amazing start for them - one defeat in five, going to Leicester and winning, it's all come to fruition," Savage told BBC Look East.

"Wouldn't it be great if we could go through and get a Premier League side in the quarter-final.

"Financially, it would be great for the club. It would give the players a big boost going up against players they see week in, week out on the telly.

"We've got a tough game against a Michael Duff side, he's a fantastic manager. They're a good side, but so are we.

"We believe, as it stands, we can beat anybody."

The influence that Savage has made on the side in his short reign so far should not be understated.

Last season under Savage, Forest Green Rovers scored 82 league goals, but also conceded 52 times in the regular season before losing to Boreham Wood in the play-offs.

Although Peterborough remain in the bottom four in League One, they are playing more attacking football and are consistently scoring late goals - including an equaliser in the 93rd minute at Bromley on Saturday.

After taking on Bradford, Peterborough next travel to Luton on Saturday in the league. In a spooky coincidence, Savage faced the same opposition last Halloween when Forest Green fell to a thrilling 4-3 defeat by Luton in the FA Cup.

After the match, the Welshman called it "one of the proudest moments of my footballing life".

"I showed them [Peterborough's squad] a video of a young group at Forest Green being 3-0 down at Luton in the FA Cup and they came back in the second half and it went to 3-3 – and then we hit the bar," Savage said.

"Then we conceded in the last minute and then we should have scored to make it 4-4.

"Jack's done unbelievably well at Luton, he's got a fantastic side, but it's about us."

Still, with just five games gone, Savage said he is learning about his players every day.

"It's just how the players respond to you," Savage added. "What makes them tick? Different things make different players tick.

"If you can get into the psychology of the player - is it family? Is it money? Let's be fair. Is it lifestyle?

"Mine was always about proving people wrong and being the best I can be.

"This group has the opportunity to be the best they can be - with a manager who believes in them."
