Guiseley fight back from two goals down to earn draw

There was one change from the side that won at Warrington Rylands, with Jack Emmett missing through illness and Amer Berchil taking his place. Kyle White also returned to the squad.

Both teams made a bright start, but the first chance went to the Lions after five minutes. A defensive mistake sent Kallan Murphy through one-on-one with Redcar goalkeeper Joshua Mazfari.

Mazfari saved Murphy’s first effort with an outstretched leg, but the ball rebounded to the striker. With the goal open, Murphy side-footed his shot over the bar.

Redcar, with Curtis Round involved in their best attacks, had periods of possession, but Guiseley looked the more dangerous side.

Cam Wilson almost opened the scoring after 12 minutes with one of his runs through the centre. Mazfari saved well at his feet.

There was danger at the other end when a Jack Hall miskick fell to Bradley Fewster. His lob appeared to be heading into the net, but Hall recovered to clear the ball.

Redcar then tested the Lions with a series of crosses. The pressure ended with Owen Burns heading a good chance wide.

The Steelmen grew into the match, and the Guiseley coaching staff later identified the 15 minutes before half-time as the team’s weakest period.

Despite that, Redcar’s two goals before the break came as a surprise.

Fewster scored the first with a volley from a half-cleared ball. Three minutes later, he intercepted a poor clearance from Hall and sent Luke Spalding through to finish.

The two-goal lead did not reflect the balance of play, but Redcar began to show why they are top with spells of confident possession after the interval.

The Lions continued to press. A low cross from Berchil led to a series of corners, which Redcar defended.

Spalding remained a threat on the break, but Ollie Brown stopped one attack with a sliding tackle. Berchil was then brought down while moving towards goal., however claims for a penalty were rejected by the officals.

Wilson went close again after another run at goal, but Mazfari saved his side-footed finish.

Ian Richards made several substitutions as Guiseley searched for a way back. Longbottom replaced Thewlis, White replaced Hopper, Tinker came on for Odunston, Sinfield replaced Staniland and Iggulden took Murphy’s place.

White moved into midfield when Tinker came on, while Lebrun Mbeka was pushed into attack. Richards believed the change unsettled the Redcar defence.

Guiseley finally reduced the deficit in the 87th minute. Wilson took advantage of uncertain defending and volleyed into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

In the 92nd minute, Redcar only partly cleared an in-swinging cross from the right. Wilson volleyed the loose ball towards goal, but his effort was blocked.

The ball returned to Wilson, whose second attempt took a deflection and wrong-footed Mazfari before entering the net.

Redcar won a corner from the restart, but Brown headed clear to end the late drama.

The result gave Guiseley a point after trailing 2-0. It also completed a comeback which reflected the team’s determination and was welcomed by the travelling supporters.
