If Mike Norvell wants to remain the head coach at Florida State, he has to finish this season extremely strong. The Seminoles have gone 10-20 since their 13-1 campaign in 2013, and their loss to the Louisville Cardinals last Friday gave them their 11th consecutive loss on the road.
No team has won fewer games in the ACC than FSU over that span as well. Simply put, Florida State has become a mess under his leadership, and his time in Tallahassee can't continue if the program continues down this path.
On Saturday, FSU will travel to play the No. 3 Miami Hurricanes, who are massive favorites to win. If they do beat the Seminoles handily, Norvell's time as the coach at Florida State could come to an end, according to Pete Nakos of On3.
Board of Trustees chair Peter Collins has long supported Norvell and has pushed back on a midseason coaching change, sources have said. But in the last 24 hours, sources have signaled that a lopsided road loss to rival Miami on Saturday night could change that. The Seminoles have a bye week before hosting Clemson on Oct. 31.
At this point, this shouldn't be surprising to anyone. Norvell just hasn't looked like a competent head coach for quite some time. Also, the recruiting side of things hasn't been great either, as the Seminoles haven't cracked the top 10 under Norvell.
The standard at FSU hasn't been met for far too long now. Norvell has had seven years to get things in order, and he's currently staring at his fifth losing season with the program. In order to stay, he's going to have to pull off a miracle.
Nakos also dropped some news about the future of defensive coordinator Tony White. Even if Florida State battles Miami in a close game, White could be let go if his unit struggles.
If Florida State plays Miami tight but still faces issues on the defensive side of the ball, a potential change at defensive coordinator has not been ruled out, sources said. Tony White’s FSU defense currently ranks No. 122 in total defense and is allowing 25.33 points per game.
White's defense has allowed well over 500 yards of offense on three occasions this season. FSU wasn't good defensively last season either, and White's units usually perform better during his second year wherever he's coached. Instead, they look worse than they did a year ago in a lot of ways.
Getting back to Norvell, it's clear now that it's not just the fan base of Florida State that's at its wits' end. This Saturday could not only be another step towards the Seminoles missing a bowl game for a third straight year, but Norvell just might put on the headset for the final time for FSU.
