Arsenal Won’t Sell £34.5m Star In January: Should Arsenal Keep Him?
Arsenal flag graphic

Arsenal head into the closing stretch of 2026 at the top of the Premier League with 27 points from 10 matches. Nine wins and one defeat have given Mikel Arteta a healthy cushion, and a defence that has conceded only five league goals explains most of it. Arsenal transfer news normally centres on what a squad lacks, yet this winter the question is whether anything needs changing, with the Champions League campaign also keeping its momentum.

The back four shows why. Riccardo Calafiori has started nine league games at left-back, contributing a goal and two assists, which makes him the undisputed first choice. Gabriel Magalhães remains the immovable left-sided centre-back, and Jurriën Timber is fully fit and comfortable on either flank.

Arteta still spent £34.5m in the summer to turn a successful initial loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent deal, and that defender now sits behind those three established starters, so his minutes have never matched the fee. A player with that price tag and few minutes becomes a natural January talking point, because rivals always test whether a settled squad holds a spare piece.

Arsenal transfer news and the Hincapié question

According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel and relayed by CaughtOffside, Arsenal have no intention of selling Piero Hincapié or changing their back four in January. Romano dismissed a swap deal involving Barcelona and called the 24-year-old Ecuador international very important and versatile for Arteta. Arsenal aren’t guaranteed to sign a forward either, though they remain open to opportunistic business if the right attacker becomes available on favourable terms.

Hincapié has played five Premier League games, all from the bench, for 73 minutes, and started twice in the Champions League. In those starts, he completed 97% of his passes, showing the press resistance and ball progression Arteta wants from a left-back who tucks into a back three or squeezes up to sustain counter-presses. He lacks Calafiori’s dynamic width, being a natural centre-back rather than an overlapping or underlapping full-back, and Calafiori’s two assists to his none explain the safety-net role.

Should Arsenal keep Hincapié rather than chase a January change?

Yes, and Arsenal should treat the Barcelona idea as a non-starter. Calafiori has a history of injuries, so the club can’t assume its first choice stays fit through the winter fixture pile-up. Swapping a left-footed 24-year-old international mid-season for a player like Alejandro Balde would damage structural depth rather than refresh it.

Arteta relies on defensive versatility to choke games out late, and Hincapié won six of eight tackles in the Champions League while recycling possession reliably, which is how title races survive winter fatigue. Arsenal need no January replacement or back-four change. They should keep this exact structure intact and save any spending for an attacker who clearly improves the first XI.
