Diogo Dalot’s Manchester United career has taken several turns since he arrived at Old Trafford as a highly rated teenager.
The Portuguese defender joined from FC Porto in 2018, with Jose Mourinho backing him to become a long-term option at right-back.
His early opportunities were limited, however, and he eventually left England to gain regular first-team football in Italy.
A season-long loan at AC Milan in 2020/21 proved valuable, with Diogo Dalot making 21 Serie A appearances and gaining experience on both sides of the defence.
He returned to United and gradually established himself as a regular, earning United’s Players’ Player of the Year award for the 2023/24 season.
Now 27, he has made more than 250 appearances for the club, although his performances have attracted mixed reactions from supporters.
AS Roma are now pursuing a potential move for Dalot, with the Italian club reportedly among several sides exploring the possibility of bringing him back to Serie A.
According to Calciomercato, Roma are interested in revisiting a deal that nearly happened in 2021, when Jose Mourinho was keen to reunite with the defender.
United rejected an initial loan proposal with an option to buy, bringing those negotiations to an end.
Roma are not alone, however.
Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus have also been linked with the Portugal international, while enquiries have reportedly already reached his representatives.
His familiarity with Italian football, following his successful spell at Milan, could make a return particularly appealing to interested clubs.
Dalot’s contract situation could also become an important factor.
His current agreement runs until June 2028, with United understood to have an option to extend it by a further year.
However, reports suggest there has been little progress towards a new long-term agreement, potentially leaving the club with a decision to make next summer.
Despite the interest, Dalot is reportedly happy at Old Trafford and remains an important member of the squad.
Roma’s meeting with United could offer another opportunity to assess the defender, but any serious move is more likely to develop ahead of the summer transfer window.
