The £30M Rangers ‘bomb squad’ that can’t get a game
Rangers bomb squad

When you’ve just won 4-0 against a hardy St Johnstone side and frankly pretty much outclassed them apart from a slightly shaky spell early in the second half, you can probably just about justify anything you do.

The questions around Rangers right now have definitely faded following their Dundee match. As a result of the St Johnstone result, McInnes was definitely under a bit more questioning. We would never say pressure at this point, but certainly questioning after those dropped points in Tayside.

The St Johnstone result and performance, however, answered a lot of questions and made everyone in blue feel and sleep a little bit easier.

Not every Rangers player is shining

However, there is the ongoing question that McInnes is starting to address of players who are not playing at the moment.

Ibrox Noise stands by our score, for example, of Dan Neil, who we believe had a poor match yesterday against the Perthshire side, and we believe hasn’t really shone for Rangers at all aside from around two or three matches.

And even against Celtic, he simply scored a double, but we’re not quite sure how much he actually dictated and controlled that match.

Nevertheless, the double against Celtic has given Neil an elevated platform of rating. And despite him returning back to that rather weak player against the side from the north, fans are still rating him highly because all they can see is the performance against Celtic.

Indeed, it’s the performance in the League Cup against Celtic that got all the plaudits. At Parkhead, he didn’t have anywhere near the same influence.

However, getting away from the point, the fact is that not all players in the shirt are shining at the moment. There are some who simply are not as strong as others.

Emmanuel Fernandez is another example. He keeps his place no matter what, despite the fact that he is absolutely diabolical on the deck with the ball and is terrible for passing and making mistakes.

He keeps his position because he’s left-footed and is strong in the air. He only required three clearances against St Johnstone, so it was a lot lower than normal. But nevertheless, he is a big lad and he keeps his place for those positive attributes.

The players who cannot get into the team

But then it leaves the question of who doesn’t play. And at the moment, it’s basically the same clutch of around ten players who are not getting into the side at all.

There’s no point in discussing the goalkeepers because Liam Kelly will never play and he knows that only too well. He’s quite happy to sit by and watch on.

But when it comes to the outfield players, that becomes a little bit more complicated.

In defence, Ben Godfrey, of course, is not getting matches. He started out as a regular under McInnes but injury curtailed him. And Makhanya took his place completely. We discuss that here.

Godfrey is now struggling to get back in the side and for now is not going to get a start. He came into Rangers to play. There’s an option to buy in his loan.

But the simple reality is that he was expected to shine for Rangers, even if Ibrox Noise’s jury was a little out on the boy, along with many of the fans as well.

And there are other players, quite a host, who are in the same kind of position.

As we’ve mentioned, Godfrey himself, Kosta Nedeljković, Tuur Rommens, technically John Souttar, Vanja Dragojević, Tochi Chukwuani, Ross McCrorie, Findlay Curtis and Bojan Miovski. Ross McCausland wasn’t even on the bench v Saints. That’s around £30M worth of player who isn’t getting much of a sniff at present.

These are a whole host of some of the players who just are not playing apart from being substitutes.

Millions of pounds sitting on the bench

This is the simple reality for a Rangers manager who’s successful. You’ll have a large squad, a deep squad, and there’ll be plenty of players who just aren’t playing.

And McInnes’ job is to manage that.

If his team is winning and getting the results, then there is not much he has to say to really justify his selections. This is why he came under question a little bit after the Dundee match.

But the reality is that he has a clutch of players, £30M worth of talent, that isn’t doing anything, that is sitting idly by.

It isn’t a problem, but it is a potential issue. As long as Rangers win, it doesn’t matter who sits on the bench and who doesn’t.

But it does matter about keeping harmony.

These players are quality individuals in most cases and would want to be playing for this team. Rather than sitting on the bench and just getting the occasional substitute appearance.

But even they cannot really complain if the team keeps on winning.

McInnes must keep the squad happy

So what does one do at the end of the day when one has this problem on their hands?

The answer is simple man management.

McInnes now has to keep harmony in the squad by ensuring that all the players who don’t play remain happy.

That isn’t easy to do when they’re not playing, but it’s on him to man-manage and ensure all these players keep their spirits up even when they’re not playing week after week.

There are so many players in Govan who are on that bench week after week. Millions of pounds worth of talent that would expect to have the shirt on a lot more than they do.

But even they cannot complain if Rangers keep on getting the points.

So for now, it’s not a problem.

It’s not a problem for as long as Rangers win.

Let’s hope that remains the case.
