While his 2026 season has been a bit up and down like a rollercoaster, most would agree that Deshaun Watson has performed better than expected through five starts. After all, the 31-year-old was fighting for the starting job back in training camp, yet he’s since led his team to a respectable 3-2 record.
While his 2026 season has been a bit up and down like a rollercoaster, most would agree that Deshaun Watson has performed better than expected through five starts. After all, the 31-year-old was fighting for the starting job back in training camp, yet he’s since led his team to a respectable 3-2 record.
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement for a Cleveland Browns offense that enters Week 6 ranking 27th in scoring. Could Shedeur Sanders create a spark for coach Todd Monken’s offense?
While the Browns have won three games this season after getting just five victories in 2025, Watson is also coming off his worst start of the campaign.
He completed just 15 of 33 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown while tying his career high with eight sacks taken. He also lost a fumble for the second week in a row.
Now some, namely Adam “The Bull” Gerstenhaber of “The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show,” believe that Watson should enter the team’s Week 6 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens on thin ice.
If Watson can’t get things turned around quickly, Adam believes it may be time to see what Sanders can do.
“If he’s terrible in this game, I would think about going to Shedeur Sanders for game seven.”
Sanders has entered the game just once, completing his only attempt for zero yards in Cleveland’s Week 3 win over the Carolina Panthers. He led the Browns to a 3-4 record last season, completing 56.6% of his passes for seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions while averaging 175 passing yards per game.
Watson is completing 64.2% of his passes for seven touchdowns and two interceptions while averaging 202 passing yards per game.
The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback ranks 23rd in PFN’s Impact Score this season, earning a grade of 70 after five weeks. Meanwhile, Sanders ranked 36th in PFN’s Impact Score in 2025, with a grade of 63, which ranked just behind his teammate Dillon Gabriel’s grade of 64.
In other words, based on last year’s sample size, the Browns may be better off rolling with the more experienced Watson.
However, there’s always a chance that the 24-year-old Sanders has improved now that he’s in his second season, especially considering the Browns now have a different head coach and a better group of pass-catchers.
How long is Watson’s leash right now? If he struggles again in Week 6, Browns fans just might get a chance to see how Sanders performs in Monken’s offense. At least, that’s what at least one Browns radio personality would like to see.
