Wrexham have had a very underwhelming start to the 2026/27 season.
After finishing just outside the Championship playoffs last season, they spent big this summer with the dream of automatic promotion to the Premier League.
However, Wrexham have flattered to deceive in the opening months of the campaign and need to improve drastically if they are to gain promotion.
Phil Parkinson's side are currently 17th in England's top tier, having accrued just 14 points from their opening 12 matches. They were beaten 2-0 by Blackburn Rovers in their most recent outing, with pressure mounting on Parkinson. Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker have both been linked with the post should Wrexham choose to make a managerial change.
Things aren't going too well for the club on the pitch, and it isn't going swimmingly for them off the field, either.
It was announced on Wednesday that Wrexham has been punished by the EFL for fielding two ineligible players this season.
The Red Dragons were found guilty of not filing the relevant paperwork correctly for either Issa Kabore or Callum O’Hare ahead of games this term.
After a successful loan spell in 2025/26, Kabore made a permanent move to the club this season as he signed in a £2 million move from Manchester City. A day after signing, he was included in Wrexham's squad to face Birmingham City and was a second half substitute in their 3-0 defeat. It has since emerged that he should not have been allowed to play due to not having a work permit.
O'Hare, meanwhile, made the £6.5m move from Sheffield United to Wrexham on deadline day. He was an unused substitute against Millwall five days later. It has since turned out that he too was eligible to play as he was not officially registered.
The EFL have now given Wrexham a £75,000 fine, with £25,000 suspended, following the rules breaches. Wrexham issued a statement following their fine.
"We can confirm that Wrexham AFC has reached an Agreed Decision with the EFL concerning two breaches relating to player eligibility," it read.
"The first breach relates to Issa Kaboré’s inclusion in the matchday squad and appearance as a substitute in the Championship defeat against Birmingham City on Friday 28 August 2026. The Club held the correct right-to-work documentation for Kaboré but did not properly submit it to the EFL, meaning he was ineligible for the fixture.
"The second breach relates to Callum O’Hare’s inclusion in the matchday squad in the Championship victory against Millwall on Wednesday 2 September 2026. O’Hare had not been registered in time to be eligible for the fixture. He did not feature in the match.
"The Club is taking the appropriate steps to prevent such issues occurring in the future."
Did it happen before or after?
Round 1 of 9
Sports Illustrated journalist Rich Fay has revealed the club are looking to appoint a new club secretary to avoid any similar future issues.
According to the Sun, Wrexham only escaped with a fine because Wrexham were beaten by Birmingham, while O'Hare played no part in their 3-0 victory over Millwall. It is claimed that had O'Hare played against Millwall, they could have been handed a points deduction.
Football fans think that Wrexham got off lightly. One fan said: 'Pathetic punishment', while another commented: 'No points deduction because they lost the game is absolutely outrageous.'
A third wrote: 'That seems incredibly lenient', while a fourth said: 'Every other teams gets deducted points for this, they have been let off massively.' A fifth stated: 'It's objectively nuts they didn't get a points deduction for this.'
Wrexham are next in action on Friday evening when they travel to Bramall Lane to take on Sheffield United.
