Morton top goalscorers remembered as we continue countdown

Over the next two weeks, I’m going to cover the ‘next’ 22 players with between 50 and 99 Ton goals to their name.

Together, these 32 players scored a third of all the club’s historic goals, spanning more thana century.

Derek Lilley: 94 goals in 275 games for Morton

Signed from Everton BC in 1991, Derek had become Morton’s top scorer by 1994/95, attracting the attention of bigger clubs.

After scoring 72 goals in 213 games, a £500,000 move to Leeds United followed.

He returned to Morton in 2005, top scoring again as Morton finished second in Division 2, before moving to St Johnstone in 2007.

Hunter Lyle: 91 goals in 197 games

Lyle was signed from Bute Athletic in 1927 and spent seven seasons at Cappielow.

He was a versatile forward who played all across the front line.

He scored 18 goals in each of three early seasons, scoring hat-tricks on seven occasions, before moving to Partick Thistle in 1934.

Stan Seymour: 90 goals in 249 games

Morton’s 'Little Englishman' was a goalscoring winger who reached double figures in all but one of his seven full seasons at Cappielow.

Having moved north from Bradford City in 1913 for a £300 fee, he was a Morton regular until his £2,500 transfer 'back home' to Newcastle United in 1920, where he became a club legend as player, manager and director.

He scored in Morton’s Great War Shield victory in 1914/15.

Alex Linwood: 88 goals in 127 games

Linwood was signed from Clyde for £6,000 in 1951, replacing the prolific Neil Mochan (see below).

He’d previously featured for St Mirren, Middlesbrough, Hibernian and Clyde.

He won a single Scotland cap whilst with Clyde.

Strong, sharp and intelligent, Linwood led the Morton line for four seasons, top-scoring in each.

He netted seven hat-tricks for Morton, before retiring in 1955.

Neil Mochan: 81 goals in 109 games

Seventeen-year-old Mochan joined Morton in 1944, National Service delaying his senior debut until 1948.

He enjoyed three memorable seasons in Greenock.

Cappielow’s drainage problems forced closure in 1948, with Morton playing in Paisley; relegation followed.

However, Mochan top-scored with 22 goals, repeating the feat the following season with 34 goals as Morton won the Division Two Championship.

In the 1951/52 season, he scored 25 times.

He is credited with Morton’s fastest ever goal (10 seconds) and hat-trick (2 minutes).

A £14,000 fee took him to Middlesborough in 1951, before joining Celtic in 1953, netting 112 goals for them and winning three Scotland caps.

John McNeill: 81 goals in 402 games

“Peanuts” joined Morton from Cowal Boys Club in 1975, scoring hours after signing, against Huddersfield Town.

McNeil was slightly built but highly creative, gracing Cappielow for 15 years, seventh in the all-time list of Morton appearances.

He scored many great goals for the club and was at his most prolific in the mid-1980s, hitting 50 goals between 1983/84 and 1986/87, when he picked up his third Morton Championship badge.

Charles McCartney: 80 goals in 257 matches

McCartney was a goalscoring left winger, signed from Old Kilpatrick in October 1925, who was a virtual ever-present, missing just three matches over his first six seasons.

Averaging around 12 goals a season, he was a consistent performer, top scoring with 16 goals in 1929/30.

Dick Black: 76 goals in 80 matches

Black enjoyed two prolific short spells with Morton.

Signing from Blantyre Victoria in 1931, he scored 38 goals in 37 games in his debut season, clinching a £2,000 move to Manchester United.

He netted five hat-tricks, uniquely including home and away trebles against Celtic.

He returned to Morton in March 1937 as the replacement for Jock Calder and scored another 38 goals in 43 matches.

Joe Harper: 75 goals in 122 games

Signed from Larkfield BC in 1963, Harper enjoyed two successful spells at Cappielow.

Scoring on his debut in a 1964 Summer Cup tie at Firhill, his breakthrough came later; his 30 goals in the 1965/66 season led to a move to Huddersfield Town in March 1966 for £35,000.

He didn’t settle there, returning to Cappielow for £15,000 in 1968.

Picking up where he’d left off, 36 top flight goals led to a £40,000 move to Aberdeen.

He subsequently won four Scotland caps and scored almost 200 goals for the Dons, as well as featuring for Everton and Hibernian.

Robert Stevenson: 70 goals in 274 games

Signed from Petershill in 1912, Stan Seymour’s inside-left partner was the classic No 10, intelligent and measured, scoring consistently throughout his eight seasons at Morton.

After nine years he moved to St Mirren in an exchange deal which brought Jock Buchanan to Morton.
