Klugman and Jacquemot fire into the final at Lexus Wrexham Open

Hannah Klugman, world number 341 was the first finalist through in front of a near sellout crowd at the Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre.

Klugman, only 17 years old progressed through to the highest ranked final of her career after a 6-1, 6-4 win over fellow Brit, Jodie Burrage.

Klugman commented: “I was very happy and a lot of positive thoughts, it’s a nice feeling knowing all of your hard work pays off as these are the big moments you play for. It’s a great feeling”

After winning her first match on the WTA tour this summer in Nottingham, Klugman is looking to win the biggest title of her professional career after she won a W50 in Portugal last month. Just reaching tomorrow’s final pushes her ranking 104 places higher, gifting her a career high ranking of 237 and higher if she wins the title.

Klugman and Jacquemot fire into the final at Lexus Wrexham Open

Klugman hasn’t lost a set this week in Wrexham, the greatest number of games she has lost in a single match is 6.

“I’ve been training really well, and I know my level is there.”

“The crowd were amazing today and definitely split 50/50 for the match today!”

On route to the final Klugman has beaten only one seeded player in the quarterfinals, 6 seed Rebecca Sramkova, but has beaten 3 players ranked higher than her on route to the final.

The second singles semifinal saw Elsa Jacquemot of France beat Suzan Lamens of Netherlands 6-2, 7-6 in a match of two halves.

Both previous top 100 players, but currently ranking 157 and 245 respectively, they delivered world class tennis that the Wrexham crowd of nearly 500 loved.

The first set saw Jacquemot dominate after breaking in the first and third game, leading Lamens 4-0.

After the match Jacquemot said “My match was very hard, Suzan played really well. I’m really happy to win this match. I’m so excited to play tomorrow”.

Lamens kept a closer grip on the second set and pushed to a second set tiebreak, following multiple breaks of sever. But Jacquemot cemented her lead and didn’t let the threatening Lamens stop her from getting through to the final in straight sets.

“The second set was difficult after it went to a tiebreak but I’m really happy I won the match”.

On the doubles side, another British clash saw Freya Christie and Eden Silva triumph over the youngsters Daniella Britton and Hannah Klugman 7-6, 6-4.

They will face fourth seeds, Hiroko Kuwata and Ankita Raina in Sunday’s Final.

Reflecting of the week so far, ahead of the final, tournament promoter Dave Courteen said, “It’s been a fantastic week of tennis, and we’re delighted with the crowds that have been in to watch the world class tennis on view.”

“Aside from the Lexus Wrexham Open, the highlight has been the One Point Grand, which saw a young British winner. We hope that’s a good omen for tomorrow!”

“The improvements that we’ve made this year have been well received by players and spectators alike and we’re grateful for the support of the Welsh Government that enabled this to happen.”

“We’re also really proud that the Lexus Wrexham Open took place in the week when Wrexham were shortlisted for the City of Culture 2029 bid and hope that what we’ve delivered with this event has helped strengthen the bid process.”

Tomorrow’s final starts at 2:00 p.m. at the Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre in front of a sellout crowd of 720.

The singles final will be on court followed by the doubles, and it’s guaranteed that new champions will be crowned as 2025 singles champion Mimi Xu was a finalist last week in W50 Quebec, after heading to US College this year. She won the doubles alongside Ella McDonald who started her US College experience last year. McDonald made it to the final in both singles and doubles at a W50 in Austin this week.

The final will be able to livestream on BBC iPlayer and YouTube.
