King's Lynn Town held to goalless draw by Southport

King’s Lynn Town weren’t exactly blown off course by Storm Boelo – but there’s no doubt this was a slip that manager Paul Caddis didn’t want.

Lynn are unbeaten in five National League North games now and, while they slipped a place to fifth, the repercussions weren’t worrying.

But Caddis knows that promotion candidates need to win their home games, whatever the conditions and whatever the state of their opponents, which, in this case, is managerless and in the relegation zone.

It was a game of few chances – Ryan Tunnicliffe’s excellent bending attempt from the edge of the area with five minutes left was the best Lynn could muster, while Southport were denied by a fine save by Ronnie Hollingshead.

Caddis pretty much summed it up post-match: ‘‘The game probably went hand in hand with the conditions.

‘‘The game wasn't horrendous, the conditions were horrendous. The game wasn't great at all.

‘‘Credit to Southport, we knew they would be vibrant, we knew they would be upbeat. That happens when a new voice comes in. So credit to them, they fully deserved their point. I didn't think we'd done enough in terms of creativity.’’

While the first half was acceptable, the second half couldn’t finish soon enough, but the easy stats are that Lynn kept a clean sheet for the fourth time in the last five games, and they were prevented from scoring for only the second time this season – the last was in the 2-0 defeat at Chester in August.

‘‘It wasn't through a lack of trying to win the game,’’ said Caddis. ‘‘We made obviously some positive subs, but the body language of the players and stuff you could see we were trying to win the game.

‘‘We were trying to do everything we possibly could. But it just wasn't as fluent as we have been. Whether that's the conditions, I don't know. Whether we just lacked a little bit, especially at the top end - I think we had one shot of note that I can remember.

‘‘To be fair to Southport, they've had a couple and they deserved a point. They came and made it really difficult for us.

‘‘They completely changed their style. You get circulars when people are available and there were four or five of them in the starting line-up last week that were available that came back in. That brought them a little bit of energy.

‘‘I thought a point overall was probably fair because I don't think there was much in the game. I think it was pretty dull, pretty similar to the weather.’’

The real downside was the sight of a distressed Reece Hall-Johnson being helped off the pitch with a shoulder injury just before the hour mark.

‘‘I don't know if it's come out but he was in a hell of a lot of pain," said Caddis. "I thought there was a push on him, but that's me just being biased and critical of what I thought was pretty poor from the officials at times.

‘‘I tried to reiterate the message to him at half-time - we wanted the game to be quick and wanted things moving and I think you can see the supporters were getting a bit frustrated with the lack of leadership in terms of this five-second rule that some implement instantly, some take 30 seconds to implement, but that's a side note.

‘‘But Reece, we'll have to assess that a bit because if he's probably going to be out a while.’’

Ethan Warne was missing with a possible hernia issue while another defender, Jamal Mohammed, has returned to parent club West Brom with his agent looking to get him a National League loan.

As Caddis so aptly remarked: ‘‘It never rains but it pours.’’
