A combination of previous results and Saturday’s outcomes, finalised by Fulham securing a 1-0 win over Hull City, has pushed Tottenham Hotspur to the bottom of the Premier League table again.
Spurs find themselves in a terrible position, accumulating only three points from six games. This has brought unparalleled scrutiny on Roberto De Zerbi, his coaching staff and the players. The Lilywhites’ performances, though, have improved in recent games. They picked up a last-gasp draw at Manchester United last time out, giving Roberto De Zerbi a few positives to hold on to.
Spurs squandered several good chances in the first half, and after going a goal and a man down after the break, a point at Old Trafford can be considered valuable.
Tottenham were the better side for large parts of the game at Old Trafford. There were several top individual performances last weekend, and Destiny Udogie was certainly one of those.
Destiny Udogie has struggled with injury problems, fitness concerns and inconsistency for the last two seasons. Yet, when he is fully healthy and focused, the 23 is one of the best left-backs in the country. The Italian international’s minutes has been managed by De Zerbi this season, and it looks like he has turned a corner with his latest display against Man United.
That is the verdict of famous podcaster John Wenham, who feels Udogie looked back to the player who was once linked with big moves away from Tottenham. He believes the left-back could make a “bloody difference” to De Zerbi’s side if he stays fit.
“I’m delighted to see him back at that level, but it’s sad to see that we only get that once in 10 games with Destiny Udogie,” John Wenham exclusively told Tottenham News.
“He was absolutely outstanding; it was like the season one version of him that we first had, where he’s powerful, he wins his duels, he bombs up and down, he’s a constant menace, taking over the left winger.
“It’s sad, because the first season we had Udogie, he was like probably the best left back in the Premier League, and that’s why he was linked with Man City for £60-80 million. It’s frustrating, but I saw him, and I thought, ‘wow, if he could just stay fit and contribute to us, he’d make such a bloody difference’.”
Recent reports suggest Juventus are plotting a cut-price move for Udogie. The Serie A giants are eager to bolster their defensive unit by signing a solid left-back, and they have set their sights on the Tottenham man. They feel an offer in the region of €15m could be deemed enough to convince the Lilywhites to sell their star defender next summer.
Udogie’s persistent fitness concerns has seen Andy Robertson arrive on a free transfer from Liverpool in the summer and quickly become Roberto De Zerbi’s first-choice left-back. Yet, with his showing at Old Trafford, it can be argued that there is still a lot more to come from the Italian and in no universe will Spurs entertain as little as €15m for his services from Juventus.
