20-year-old domestic Pakistani captain continues golden run with third hundred of debut season

Tayyab Arif continued his exceptional run in the President’s Trophy for Kingmen Academy with a third century of his debut season.

Tayyab Arif is turning heads in his debut first-class season with a stunning show with the bat

Arif smashed 120 runs off 110 deliveries, with a staggering 17 fours and two sixes against State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) at the National Ground in Islamabad. This was his third century of the season, having also made his first-class debut as captain.

His previous two centuries came against Ghani and Oil & Gas Development Company Limited, scoring 122 and 105 respectively in the first innings of each game. With his 120-run knock against SBP, the 20-year-old took his tally to a stunning 722 runs in 12 innings at an average of 72.22 with three centuries and four half-centuries.

As for the match against Kingsmen Academy, Arif came out to bat at three in the second innings after they lost Maaz Sadaqat for a six-ball duck in the first over. Arif then stitched a 140-run partnership for the second wicket with Muhammad Huraira (57) before adding 90 more for the third wicket with Muhammad Suleman (59).

In the process, Arif notched up his second consecutive century, even as his knock enabled his team to set up a quick declaration on the final day. Kingsmen Academy smashed 321 runs for the loss of three wickets in just 44 overs and set a target of 295 for SBP.

For the unversed, Kingsmen Academy posted 371 runs in the first innings when Arif endured a rare failure, mustering only five runs. However, four other batters, Maaz, Saud Shakeel, Usman Khan and Muhammad Shayan, scored half-centuries to propel their team’s score.

In response, State Bank of Pakistan rode on an unbeaten century from Ali Shan and scored 398 runs, gaining a 27-run lead in the first innings. The match seemed to be headed towards a tame draw, but Arif’s century helped the Kingsmen set a challenging target on the last day. At the time of writing, SBP were 64-2 after 12 overs, with the match set up for an exciting finish.
