Having had to make a comeback the week prior away at AEK Boco (a feisty game that saw them win 3-2 after being 2-0 down at half-time), the Posset girls decided to take control early on by scoring in just the 4th minute.
In a similar fashion to the winner in that Boco game, Mia Blazey would take a brilliant corner to find the feet of Mathilda Knight, who then smashed the ball to score for the second game in a row.
Portishead were looking fired up, with captain Shannon Holloway coming close to scoring the second through a shot from outside the box, only narrowly being denied by the crossbar.
She wouldn’t have to wait long to get on the scoresheet however, as in the 24th minute Phoebe Tate threaded a brilliant ball through Poole’s backline, finding Holloway who slotted it near post.
It was already looking like a brilliant start as the first half was winding down, but another well-delivered corner from Blazey allowed Rachael Poole to score Posset’s third with the back of her head at 45+2.
Eventually the whistle blew and Portishead went inside with a spring in their step.
Clearly intent on picking up where they’d left off, Knight made it a brace for herself in the 50th minute following a great run down the wing by Holloway.
The captain had left Poole’s fullback scrambling to catch up, providing the time to pick out a great pass across goal and get the assist for Portishead’s fourth of the afternoon.
A few minutes later, Poole’s day went from bad to worse when their keeper suffered a knock, leading to her being substituted for an outfield player.
The visitors by now were looking to limit the damage, and so started maintaining possession and slowing the game down.
Although the substitute keeper made some great saves, including tipping a rifled shot from Alanna Torrington over the bar, they couldn’t deny Portishead from getting one more out of them.
As she had already done twice that game, Blazey swung a great ball in from a corner, this time finding the head of Holloway at the back post to make it 5-0 in the 67th minute.
Some odd chances and back-and-forth defending later, and Portishead would make it seven games unbeaten in unprecedented fashion.
Next up for the Posset Ladies is a trip down to Cornwall for a match with St. Agnes AFC in the FA Cup first round proper.
With this being the furthest that St Agnes Women have ever progressed in the competition, it’s certain to be a passionate game for all.
