Aston Villa boss shared how he enjoys the current changes in his team eventhough it is quite drastic.
Aston Villa has gone through a drastic changes this season. Losing most of their spine players such as Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martinez really shocked the fans at first. Then, signing 11 new players with mostly younger talents instead of top names last summer followed by big loss against Brighton at the opener really tested the fans’ patience.
It may seem turbulent change but the team remains calm and confident with Aston Villa boss himself being the face of such general feeling in the team. Apparently, Unai Emery himself has not even worried about the team’s performance or the process of rebuilding the team. In fact, he has had a good time with it, as reported in Birmingham mail for one of his interview.
”We are building a team in a successful way in the first year, but we did not change the squad so much. We had a lot of challenges and I was enjoying those good performances, but this year especially more because we changed more than normal.”
The Spanish boss is no stranger to rebuilding team. He did it before and remained successful, particularly in Valencia and Sevilla, in which he stayed for quite a while. Emery added on his comment on such issue.
“Every year we needed to sell some players, but we have bought players too, with potential. This summer was a little bit different; we sold more than we usually do.We were buying younger and more players than we did before. That needs time to get them to understand our demands.
“But I’m not frustrated. I like to build teams, to watch them individually and collectively to see how they progress. I’d like sometimes to buy the best players in the world! But I accept how we are doing and what is our capacity. But the club is doing a huge amount of effort in a lot of things in our budget.
“We are moving in the right direction, trying to be intelligent and work maybe even harder than other clubs to exploit our young players, with their talent, but I like it.”
What’s more important is how Emery proves his words. Villa did have winless run again for the first three games but they quickly turned the table into positive trend. European matches helped them gain more confidence. Victories eventually entailed.
The Lions did not even have to experience the same negative nearly frustrating period like last season when they had to be winless in six consecutive games in all competitions, including heading to exit in EFL League Cup so early.
Now, as the team is heading to the beginning of crucial stage, they are seemingly moving to their top form after thumping Manchester City last weekend, which was their first win at their home turf in the Premier League and the first stain of defeat for the league leader. Next, more challenges to come, including the visit to Camp Nou and Old Trafford. In Emery we trust!
