Newcastle United left the hallowed turf at St James' Park to a chorus of boos after their 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa - and things could get worse before they get better for Matthias Jaissle.
Before the game Jaissle had demanded that Newcastle were "better in both boxes" but they didn't improve on that score, and managed to fail in the midfield battle too. Jaissle was forced to tear up his original plans before the hour mark in this one and ended the game throwing 34-year-old centre-back Dan Burn in attack as Newcastle struggled to find an equaliser.
By the end of the night Newcastle had managed just one shot on target, which came from another centre-half in Sven Botman as United's attack spluttered. In fairness, some of the boos were aimed at the officials after half a dozen bookings for Newcastle players.
But by the same token, other fans fumed at Newcastle's lack of potency on the night not to mention the fact Villa were easily able to pick off Newcastle and create 15 goal attempts. This inept display was not a satisfactory response from Newcastle's 4-1 mauling at Coventry and Toon fans will be concerned at where the next win is coming from at this rate.
The Magpies earned a corner in the eighth minute, but it merely sparked a quick counter-attack for Villa after Lewis Hall's poor delivery. Alysson's marauding run down the right saw him pick out Nicolas Jackson, who swept past Harvey Barnes but drilled a poor finish straight at Lukas Hornicek.

Newcastle and Villa traded shots either side of the 15th-minute mark, but both Joe Willock and Matty Cash could only find the side netting. The game turned feisty in the 17th minute as referee Jarred Gillett produced two yellow cards in the space of seconds and set the tone for the rest of the night.
First, Joelinton got his home banker caution for a foul on Johan Manzambi, then Sven Botman flew in on Jackson with a late challenge to pick up a booking. Things could have got worse for the Dutchman, who had to sweat it out over a VAR check, but he escaped further punishment.
The Magpies had a let off as Manzambi slipped in Jackson but Botman's block diverted the ball to safety on the half-hour mark. But Manzambi made no mistake when he powered home a header from Joao Gomes' cross from the right.
It was a frustrating goal for the Newcastle fans as Gomes had time to weigh up his cross while Manzambi had time and space to nod home at the Gallowgate End.
Villa almost doubled their lead when Emi Buendia's effort bounced off the upright and hit Hornicek in a close shave for the Magpies om 38 minutes. A mix of boos greeted referee Gillett, after his over zealous reaction to a series of Newcastle challenges, and the home team's performance as the sides went in for half-time.
Unai Emery made one change at the break as Alysson, who had been booked for diving, was replaced by John McGinn. Three minutes into the second half, a Botman shot was tipped away by Japan star Suzuki as Newcastle had their first shot on target.
But Gillett was soon issuing yellow cards once again as both Nico Gonzalez and Yoane Wissa were cautioned for fouls on McGinn and Suzuki. Jaissle opted to make changes on 55 minutes when Willock and Matias Fernandez-Pardo were hooked after ineffective displays.
The duo were replaced by William Osula and Bazoumana Toure who were sent on to liven the attack up. Villa then spiced things up with 20 minutes to go when bringing on Ross Barkley, Ibrahim Mbaye and former Bayern Munich star Leon Goretzka.
Within minutes, Mbaye and Barkley linked up with the ex-England man forcing a save out of Hornicek at the Leazes End. The referee had his book out again as Osula slid in to block Villa substitute Pau with 12 minutes left.
Joelinton rolled a cross to Wissa from the right but the DR Congo man dragged his effort wide of the target with 10 minutes to go. Villa had a chance to seal the deal with seven minutes left as Barkley poked the ball into the path of Mibaye, but he lifted it over the bar.
It left the door ajar for Newcastle, but even when Wissa wriggled through into the final third, he guided his effort well wide. Moments later as Mibaye tried to skip through into a pretty much unguarded Newcastle half, Malick Thiaw steamed in and joined his team-mates in the book.
Osula headed wide of the target with two minutes to go as Newcastle then tried to throw Dan Burn up front in a bid to steal a point. But given the service had been lacking all day, Newcastle could not even manage to pick out the 6ft 7in centre back.
And at the end, those boos once again rang out around St James' Park as Newcastle crashed to their first home defeat of what is now proving a testing campaign.
