Bagging what turned out to be a maiden Champions League strike during Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat away at Fenerbahce on Wednesday evening, Trey Nyoni is enjoying a sudden rise to superstardom.
The Athletic are reporting that Nyoni and his representatives are advancing in talks over a bumper new deal at Anfield and both parties are hopeful that a breakthrough will come soon.
Although the Anfield hierarchy might be working tirelessly to complete an official agreement, Liverpool are now confident that they will be able to tie down the 19-year-old to a new long-term deal.
Relishing life under the guidance of Andoini Iraola and with the former Bournemouth boss making it clear that Nyoni is part of his plans at Anfield, the England U21 international is quickly establishing himself as a real fan favourite in the red half of Merseyside.
Now starting in each of Liverpool’s previous three consecutive appearances across all competitions, the former Premier League champions rejected a £30million bid from Nottingham Forest over the summer.
The England U21 international has now made 12 appearances across all fronts so far this season and has continued to impress playing in a deep-lying midfield role.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s 3-2 Champions League defeat in Istanbul, Iraola was filled with praise for his budding midfield starlet:
“Trey just has to continue in the same way as since the beginning of pre-season, be ready for all of the games,” he added. “We trust him, he’s doing very well. We have to encourage him to continue learning, improving and getting experience. But he’s in a very good place.”
Trey Nyoni is in advanced talks with Liverpool over a contract extension.
The 19-year-old has been discussing his future with the club for months and there’s hope a breakthrough will follow soon. While a new deal has yet to be finalised, there’s optimism an agreement will be reached.
