Blackhawks Blow Multiple Leads, Can’t Close in 5-4 OT Loss To Bruins
Blackhawks Blow Multiple Leads, Can’t Close in 5-4 OT Loss To Bruins

The Chicago Blackhawks (4-9-1) were 10.2 seconds away from their first road win of the 2026-27 regular season, but couldn’t finish the job against the Boston Bruins (10-4-1) at TD Garden on Saturday.

Morgan Geekie scored with goaltender Michael DiPietro on the bench for the extra attacker, tying the game 4-4 with 10.2 seconds left in the third period. Then, in overtime, Elias Lindholm fought through contact from Oliver Moore and stuffed the game-winner past Arvid Soderblom, completing the 5-4 comeback for the Bruins.

The Blackhawks earned their first road point of the season on Saturday, but they will be vastly disappointed they didn’t walk out of TD Garden with two. Especially with the game being the final leg of the dad’s trip.

Chicago played by far their best game of the season against the Bruins, recording a season-high 41 shots on goal and leading 38-34 in scoring chances. The Hawks had failed to reach 29 shots on goal in any of their first 13 games.

Rookie Anton Frondell was arguably the best player on the ice for either team and had his most impactful game of the year, snapping a nine-game goal drought. Frondell tallied two goals and a team-high 13 shot attempts, nine shots on goal, and nine individual scoring chances in 19:15 of ice time.

Captain Connor Bedard also had his most explosive performance since returning from injury and extended his current point streak to five games. Bedard recorded two points (1G, 1A), six shots on goal, and nine individual scoring chances in 22:07. He had several chances for his first multi-goal effort of the season.

Additionally, the Blackhawks generated a power-play goal from their new-look top unit, with Frondell’s first of two goals opening the scoring just 6:04 into the game. Frondell skated at the right circle with the top unit after playing mostly on the second unit this season. Bedard also took over for Teuvo Teravainen at the point. Entering Saturday’s game, the Hawks were 4-0-0 when scoring a power-play goal this season.

With the primary assist on Frondell’s opening goal, Patrick Kane officially became just the 21st player in NHL history with 900 career assists. He’s the first American-born player in league history to accomplish the feat.

But despite the improved offensive shoot-first mentality and enhanced production, scoring more than two goals for the first time since Oct. 15, the Blackhawks still didn’t do enough to get back into the win column in Beantown. The Bruins played with desperation and constantly pressured the Hawks in the third period, clawing back from down 4-2 with 7:40 to go.

The Blackhawks blew leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first two periods, then couldn’t hang onto a two-goal cushion with under eight minutes remaining. They also surrendered three unanswered goals to close Saturday’s game.

David Pastrnak, Casey Mittelstadt, and Mason Lohrei scored Boston’s first three goals of the game. DiPietro stopped 37 of 41 shots to earn the win in net.

Soderblom, who made his first start in 23 days, allowed five goals on 32 shots faced, earning the loss for Chicago.

Here are highlights from the Blackhawks 5-4 overtime loss to the Bruins, dropping their 2026-27 regular-season record to 4-9-1 in 14 games.

First Period

The new-look top power-play unit scored just 10 seconds into their first look together, with Frondell burying a one-timer from the right circle at 6:04, putting the Blackhawks ahead 1-0.

Kane recorded the primary assist, making him just the 21st player in NHL history to record 900 career assists. Bedard extended his point streak to five games with the secondary assist.

It was also the Blackhawks’ first road power-play goal of the season.

One of the few shots Boston recorded in the period came from Pastrnak on a breakaway, tying the game 1-1 at 13:05. Pastrnak snuck out of the zone early, got behind the Blackhawks defense, snapped a shot over Soderblom’s glove.

Pastrnak’s 428th career goal passed Patrice Bergeron for third all-time in Bruins history.

Frondell had an active start to Saturday’s game, scoring the opening goal and recording a team-high four shots, four individual scoring chances, and winning all four faceoffs in the period. The 19-year-old came close to beating DiPietro a second time at the 17-minute mark after a wicked move to get past Aspirot.

Despite the score being tied 1-1, the Blackhawks had their best road period of the season, leading 14-7 in shots on goal and 12-6 in scoring chances.

Second Period

The Blackhawks regained their lead at 3:31 in the second period, as Bertuzzi’s wrist shot from the boards deflected off Frondell and past DiPietro for his second goal of the game. 2-1, Blackhawks.

Bertuzzi snapped his five-game point drought with the primary assist. Rinzel also snapped his eight-game point drought with the secondary helper.

Mittelstadt tied the game 2-2 after a poor neutral-zone turnover from Wyatt Kaiser, with the Bruins successful countering on the rush. Mittelstadt skated into the slot and wristed a shot past Soderblom’s glove at 12:34.

The two teams were engaged in a full-blown scrum late in the period, which stemmed from Alex Vlasic going after Mittelstadt. While Vlasic was tangled up with Mittelstadt, Nikita Zadorov entered the skirmish and decided to get involved. Zadorov caught Vlasic in the face with a sucker-punch, but somehow the Blackhawks didn’t get a power play.

Considering what Frank Nazar was suspended for earlier this season, Zadorov better face serious discipline from the NHL Department of Player Safety.

The score remained tied 2-2 through 40 minutes, with the Blackhawks leading 28-13 in shots on goal and 26-16 in scoring chances. It was their most effective first two periods of the year.

Third Period

Greene put the Blackhawks back ahead 3-2 at 9:38 in the third period, calling his own number on a 3-on-1 rush after several quality stops from Soderblom. Kantserov was credited with the secondary assist, extending his point streak to four games.

Less than three minutes after Greene’s tally, Bedard got all alone with DiPietro and scored a beautiful backhanded goal, extending the Blackhawks lead to 4-2 at 12:20. Ryan Donato made a terrific defensive-zone play just moments before Bedard’s breakaway.

With under eight minutes remaining, the Blackhawks seemed well on their way to victory…

But 46 seconds after Bedard’s goal, Lohrei answered back for the Bruins, trimming their deficit to one at 13:06. JJ Peterka made a qicked move down low to create separation below Chicago’s net and find Lohrei at the far post. 4-3.

With the extra attacker on the ice for Boston, the Blackhawks were caught scrambling defensively, and Geekie rifled a one-timer from the left circle past Soderblom, tying the game at 19:49. 4-4. The Bruins faithful in attendance at TD Garden erupted.

Overtime

After DiPietro denied Frondell of two Halloween hat-trick bids, Lindholm completed the comeback for Boston at 2:32 of overtime, fighting through soft contract from Moore and stuffing the puck past Soderblom. 5-4, Bruins. FINAL.

The Blackhawks first road win of the season in their hands, but they couldn’t squeeze it tight. A crushing overtime defeat drops their record to 4-9-1. The Hawks return to action next on Monday against the Colorado Avalanche at the United Center.
