Albert Gonzalez Knocks Out Edward Vazquez In Two

Albert “Chop Chop” Gonzalez broke through Edward Vazquez’s defenses with a punishing body attack, scoring a second-round knockout to retain his NABF featherweight title Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas.

The unbeaten Gonzalez improved to 19-0 with 12 knockouts in the scheduled ten-round co-main event on the Emanuel Navarrete–O’Shaquie Foster card on DAZN. Vazquez dropped to 20-4 with six knockouts, losing his three-fight winning streak.

Gonzalez gave little away about the approaching finish during a quiet opening round. The 24-year-old allowed Vazquez to be the more active fighter while taking time to find his distance. There was no sustained attack from Gonzalez, and the veteran challenger had an opportunity to get started without immediately being forced into survival mode.

That changed quickly in the second.

Gonzalez hurt Vazquez early and moved straight into his finishing work, throwing short combinations rather than giving the challenger time to recover. His punches downstairs did the most damage, with a left hook to the body among the blows that sent Vazquez to the canvas.

Referee Laurence Cole completed the ten-count with Vazquez unable to rise in time. Once Gonzalez increased his output, the fight went from a cautious start to a one-sided finish.

The result followed Gonzalez’s second-round body-shot knockout of Aaron Alameda in July, when he won the vacant NABF belt. Trained by Robert Garcia, Gonzalez again showed how quickly his compact punches can become decisive when an opponent remains within range.

Vazquez brought experience against Joe Cordina and Rafael Espinoza, along with recent winning form, but neither helped him absorb Gonzalez’s body attack. He had entered after three consecutive victories, including a decision over Daniel Lugo.

Gonzalez still needs tougher tests before his championship potential can be judged fully. This performance, however, gives his team reason to seek a higher-level opponent: Vazquez never had time to make his experience count once Gonzalez began landing heavily.
