Australia National Cricket Team’s explosive batter Tim David is ready to take on a new challenge in 50-over cricket. Tim David is all set to represent Tasmania in the domestic one-day tournament, as he aims to earn a place in Australia’s squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
The 30-year-old’s return to the 50-over format has come at an important time for Australian cricket. The team has been searching for a reliable power-hitter at the deaths following Glenn Maxwell’s retirement, and David could be an option if he proves himself in the coming months.
Tasmania head coach Jeff Vaughan has confirmed that Tim David is serious about improving his one-day game and giving himself a chance to represent Australia again in the format. Earlier, Steve Smith achieves rare milestone in second SA vs AUS Test.
Vaughan revealed that Tasmania had been discussing David’s return to one-day cricket for some time, but his franchise commitments had made it difficult to find the right opportunity, although the upcoming fixtures have opened the door for him to play.
Jeff Vaughan said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, "Pretty exciting, isn't it? It's something that's been spoken about the last few years; it's just been a case of what stage it could align with his schedule and the playing schedule. We're fortunate that the next couple of games do align with his schedule from a franchise perspective. He outwardly says how much he loves playing his cricket in Tasmania, and to play another game for Tasmania, he's really excited for as well.”
David has not played a List A match since featuring in four ODIs for Australia before the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The explosive batter was brought into the team as a replacement for the injured Maxwell during Australia’s five-match ODI series against South Africa.
His experience in the format is limited, but his recent performances have been impressive. David smashed two centuries and an unbeaten 52 in eight innings for Surrey in England’s One-Day Cup. He also played one List A match for Tasmania and represented Singapore in five matches.
His busy franchise schedule has kept him away from Australia's domestic competitions. David does not have a state contract, and he last played competitive cricket in the European T20 Premier League in mid-September. Amid this, Pat Cummins expects Cameron Green and Josh Inglis to be available for third South Africa Test.
Australia’s need for a strong finisher has made Tim David’s decision even more interesting. The team has been struggling to finish the innings strongly consistently. With Glenn Maxwell no longer available, David’s ability to clear the boundary could help Australia solve this problem.
The Tasmania head coach said, “Undoubtedly, there's another part of that with a 50-over World Cup around the corner. He wants to make himself available for that.
He wants to keep playing in this format, learn it, be good at it, and then make it possible for the Australians to select him in that format as well. So yeah, he's looking forward to it.”
Tasmania is expected to use David in the middle order, most likely at No. 6 in the one-day tournament. Vaughan wants him to come in around the 30th over, when his aggressive batting can have the biggest impact on the final stages of an innings.
David has scored two List A centuries at No. 4, while his only T20 century for Australia came at No. 5. However, Tasmania believes his usual finishing role will suit him well in the one-day format.
