Will Alves' Leicester City plan pays off as Russell Martin's new secret weapon emerges

Josh Holland with the talking points from Leicester City's League One thrashing of Bromley on Tuesday night

Will Alves was unstoppable against Bromley

Will Alves is the one player in the Leicester City squad that has proved his worth in nearly every game this season, even in fixtures where City have been lacklustre in attack. Against Bromley, the 21-year-old looked significantly above this level.

The academy graduate has progressed through the club's ranks as an attacking midfielder and winger, with his bravery, flair and low centre of gravity forcing fans out of their seats. In his first campaign in the first team, Alves has already produced, but he's being asked to change his game.

Martin's switch to a 3-4-2-1, a formation he utilised at Swansea City, means City are no longer playing with natural wingers. Instead, the two wing-backs drop back to help defend their goal while supporting almost every attack. After encouraging signs against Doncaster, both Luke Thomas and Alves were in top form at Hayes Lane.

Both players are instructed to do different things, with Alves pushing as far forward as he can when City have the ball in their box, like a winger. The space vacated was then picked up by Sammy Braybrooke, a pattern of play that was a constant on Tuesday night.

During the warm-ups, Thomas joined the three centre-backs in practising organisation and playing out from the back, while Alves took part in a shooting drill alongside Emil Riis. Almost every shot he took, he scored. So when he opened the scoring after four minutes, it was no surprise.

Credit goes to Braybrooke for his immaculate dribbling in the middle of Bromley's half before feeding the ball to Alves. Just like he did when practicing, Alves took one touch before smashing the ball home.

Alves was unstoppable in the first-half and forced Bromley to take left-back Richard Taylor off at the break. Mitchell Pinnock struggled to keep up with the youngster in the second half, with the Leicester star playing with so much enjoyment.

His attacking influence is no real surprise, but it's in the defensive third where he's showing great maturity. Having three centre-backs means Leicester are defending their own box drastically better than they did before, but the role the two wing-backs are playing in containing danger out wide is proving instrumental.

Alves isn't known for his defensive ability, but having Warren O'Hora behind him is proving vital. "It's great, he's always speaking to me throughout the game and really helping me, all the backline [do]," he said after the win.

"[He's] great at communicating to me and trying to help me through that side of the game as well. I've enjoyed it." If Alves continues at this rate, he will be one of Leicester's better players this season. What makes his rise even better is the commitment he has to the club, something every fan will love to hear.

When asked how he's finding playing in a new role, he replied: "I'm enjoying it, to be fair. Wherever I'm needed for this team, I just want to give my best each game and wherever I'm playing, I'm happy."

New face in dugout

Victories over Bromley and Doncaster have put Leicester in their strongest position yet under Martin. The football has been flowing, the chances have been converted, they have defended much better and six points have been picked up.

The change in formation has played a huge role in that, as has going back to basics and the cutting out of individual mistakes. But the two wins have also come in the two games that Steve Morison has been in the dugout.

Morison has been the club's loans manager since the back end of last season, with his role focused on getting the best loan moves for City's youngsters. However, he's recently joined Martin's coaching set-up.

Fitness coach Rhys Owen and Conor Hourihane arrived with Martin in the summer, with Andy King remaining as first team coach. The four have worked closely throughout the early stages of the season, mixing their responsibilities - with King earning praise for his attacking set-pieces - but Morison's inclusion adds the attacking instinct that has been lacking.

As a player, Morison scored 173 goals across spells with Millwall, Stevenage and Norwich, where he played alongside Martin. Since retiring, he's had a brief spell in charge of Cardiff City between 2021 and 2022 before managing Hornchurch and Sutton United.

But it is before a ball has even been kicked that Morison has been most noticeable. At the weekend, the entire matchday squad and coaching staff joined together for a team huddle before the warm-ups concluded and the same happened at Bromley, with Morison leading the instruction.

Although it is a small detail, togetherness within a squad is powerful and something the Foxes have lacked for years.

"Steve is someone I played with and know," Martin told post-match. "He's at this club and he's been the Loans Manager for a while now. He's been a manager and he's someone I respect a lot.

"I just think he can add to us and help us. I really enjoy Steve's personality and energy. He'll help us and he'll add to us and I appreciate Jon [Rudkin] and James [McCarron] for allowing that to happen."

City are actually good.. away from home

It's gone under the radar amid the unsteady start to the season, but Leicester's win at Bromley extended their rather impressive form away from the King Power Stadium. The 4-0 victory means they have now lost just one of their last 12 away league games.

Considering they were terrible last season under Gary Rowett, that's pretty outstanding. In their five trips on the road this season, Leicester have won two and drawn three, including a 4-3 triumph over new league leaders Stockport County.

Their last defeat on the road in the league came at Portsmouth, with draws against Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town, Watford and Sheffield Wednesday coming before the final day victory over Blackburn Rovers.

City are one of three teams - alongside Cambridge and Leyton Orient - yet to lose away from home in League One this season. It's proving to be a strength of theirs and something that will ultimately pay off. Last season's League One champions Lincoln City had the best away record, with second-placed Cardiff City having the third-best record on the road.

One thing Leicester have had to contend with in their away games - except at MK Dons - has been the atmosphere generated by the home supporters. Notts County, Stockport, Barnsley and Bromley all drew good attendances for the visit of the former Premier League champions. So far, City have weathered that storm in a professional manner.

Fortunately, their next game is at Luton Town...

Leicester's Modric proves class

Sammy Braybrooke, what a performance. The 'Leicester Modric' looked exceptional against Bromley on Tuesday night, producing his best display in a more advanced role this season.

The midfielder registered three assists at Hayes Lane: two came from perfectly cushioned through balls, while the other followed a well-timed run and cross for Thomas. He joins Louis Page in getting a hat-trick of assists in one game this season.

Without sounding too clichéd, it was reminiscent of Luka Modrić. He glided with the ball with ease, went forward at the right time, played it simple when needed and got into some dangerous spaces that were near-impossible for Bromley to defend.

Emil Riis celebrates

"I'm enjoying it, I love a challenge and I'm relishing the challenge," the 22-year-old told "I'm not going to sit and say it's easy, it's definitely not. It's tough adapting, trying to break the boxes to what the gaffer wants, but I'm enjoying the challenge.

"As you've seen today, I can finally get on the numbers hopefully. I still think there's a lot to work on, in my opinion, for me in that position, which I hope I can keep on doing."

Braybrooke's performance makes him difficult to drop for the weekend, while the midfield competition is becoming increasingly intense. With Will Smallbone and Conor Chaplin getting back to full fitness, City's engine room is showing real potential.
