Allegri remains defiant after Napoli held by Lazio

Massimiliano Allegri insists Napoli are still fighting on all fronts despite their recent struggles after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Serie A leaders Lazio.

Davide Frattesi opened the scoring for the visitors when his sweet left-footed strike caught Vanja Milinkovic-Savic out at the near post, leaving Napoli staring at a second successive Serie A defeat.

The Partenopei responded less than three minutes into the second half, however, as half-time substitute Alfonso Pedraza inadvertently turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund.

Kevin De Bruyne later saw an effort saved before Reda Belahyane scrambled the loose ball clear on the goal line, with Napoli ultimately forced to settle for a point.

The result means Napoli have won just one of their last five Serie A matches. Allegri acknowledged Napoli are not where they want to be, but remains convinced there is no need for panic.

"Let us remember we are not out of Serie A, the Coppa Italia or the Champions League yet," Allegri told DAZN.

"There are difficult moments over the course of a campaign. I believe we need to deal with them in a spirit of calm.

"When we are in the middle of the storm, we manage to get the boat to shore somehow.

"When the team wins, the fans think we're great; when we lose, they don't. All I can tell the fans is that this team is giving its all, mentally and physically."

Napoli remain some way off pace-setters, Lazio, after a difficult run of results, but the draw at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona at least halted their recent slide, even if there was disappointment at not taking all three points.

"We wasted some big chances, but these things happen," Allegri added. "I have faith in these lads and with more organisation, we can get back on track."

With the international break now providing an opportunity to regroup, Allegri will hope his side can emerge from the period refreshed ahead of a crucial run of fixtures in Serie A and the Champions League.

Asked how he was coping with Napoli's difficult spell, the former Juventus and AC Milan boss cut a relaxed figure, saying: "I am fine. Fortunately, I haven't had that many of these periods in my career.

"These lads need support and are doing their best."

In the opposite dugout, Gennaro Gattuso praised Lazio's mentality despite seeing their six-game winning streak in the league come to an end, admitting he was encouraged by the reaction inside the dressing room.

"I went into the dressing room, and it was like a morgue," he said. "I like that the team is disappointed.

"We're proud of these lads. Coming here at a moment like this is never easy, so we have to be satisfied."

Frattesi has become the third Italian midfielder to score 25 or more goals in Serie A since the 2021-22 season, with his effort against Napoli his 26th in the top-flight.

The Lazio boss also reserved special praise for goalscorer Frattesi, saying: "There are few players in Europe who attack space like him. We work on his bursts of speed so he can do things like this."

The result extends Lazio's unbeaten start to the Serie A season to 11 matches (W9 D2) and keeps them top of the table, with Gattuso keen to ensure his side keep their focus despite their impressive position.

"We mustn't look at it. We don't really belong up there; we have to take it day by day," Gattuso added.

"We showed courage again. We suffered, and we knew they'd put us in difficulty. We accepted that, and that's mentality. Right now, we need to keep banking points."

The Biancocelesti welcome Lecce after the international break, looking to return to winning ways, while Napoli host Torino as they seek to build on Sunday's draw.
