There are still three unbeaten teams in the NFL this season and the San Francisco 49ers maintained their 100 per cent record on Monday with their sixth win of the season against the Washington Commanders.
Despite their significant lead in the third quarter, the 49ers fans at Levi’s Stadium were left sweating in the final minutes as the Commanders mounted a late comeback. However, Kyle Shanahan was able to steer his team to yet another victory.
There was a moment during the game that saw the 49ers’ head coach come under a bit of pressure from Troy Aikman during ESPN’s coverage of the game. On a fourth and three play in the first quarter, Shanahan lined up his offence to go for it.
“I think analytics is a good way to lose your job as a head coach. I think you’ve got to be smart about it and Kyle certainly is,” said the colour commentator.
This comment from Aikman has seen a number of NFL fans hit back at the former quarterback as his own future with the network remains up in the air.
Aikman’s future with ESPN remains unclear as the Hall of Famer’s contract negotiations have hit a stumbling block. There have even been some suggestions that Aikman and Joe Buck’s relationship has been impacted.
Aikman’s comments during the game on Monday did not go down well with some fans as many reacted online.
‘Seems like ignoring them is a good way to lose your job as a commentator,’ replied one fan on X.

‘I think this kind of commentary is a good way to lose your job as a broadcaster,’ said another.
Aikman commented on his future with ESPN last week as he spoke about becoming a free agent following the conclusion of the 2026 season. There is still time for the two parties to finally agree on a deal, though.
‘Says the commentator about to lose his job,’ said another fan as the theme of Aikman’s future continued.
‘What an odd thing to say about the best coach in the NFL,’ replied another.
Shanahan has arguably been the best head coach in the league so far as his Niners team have looked unfazed through the opening six weeks. A long season remains ahead but their lead in the NFC West has now been extended even further over Week Six.
‘He’s legit gotta go. It’s time to move on ESPN,’ replied another NFL fan.
‘And they scored a TD after this too. Troy is always so bitter,’ added another.
