The Miami Heat are entering a new era in 2026-27 with Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the way, but the schedule will not make the transition easy. Miami opens the season with six road games and faces two back-to-backs during its first 10 contests.
For a team adjusting to a major change in its identity, the opening stretch will be an early test of its chemistry, conditioning, and ability to win away from home.
Despite the challenging schedule, the Heat have several favorable matchups that should give them opportunities to build momentum. Games against the Sacramento Kings, LA Clippers, Charlotte Hornets, and Dallas Mavericks stand out as contests Miami should be capable of controlling.
Those matchups could be especially important as the team figures out how to maximize Antetokounmpo's ability to attack the rim, create opportunities for teammates, and ultimately figure out the rotation behind the starting 5.

The remaining games are closer to coin flips, particularly with Miami spending so much time on the road early in the season. Even with Antetokounmpo's arrival raising expectations, the Heat will need time to establish their rotations and develop chemistry around their new centerpiece. A difficult opening schedule should not necessarily be cause for concern, but it will reveal how quickly this group can come together.
Prediction: 6-4. Miami should have the defensive prowess and enough talent to finish its first 10 games with a winning record, even if the road-heavy schedule creates some early obstacles. Winning the games against Sacramento, Los Angeles, Charlotte, and Dallas will be crucial, while splitting the more challenging matchups would put the Heat in a strong position.
A 6-4 start would be a promising beginning to the Antetokounmpo era and provide a foundation for Miami to build on as the season progresses.
Now time for the opinion of others here OnSi.
"The Heat have an interesting first 10 games of the season. They face several formidable opponents and have 2 back to backs early in the season. They are also trying to get acclimated to one another. Despite these issues I think the Heat manage to go around 7-3 give or take a game on each side. Miami needs to get off to a hot start in a loaded East and I believe they do."
"This is what many are overlooking about this version of the Miami Heat: it's not entirely new. Giannis played with Bobby Portis Jr. for six seasons. Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson started together on the 2022 championship Warriors. Bam Adebayo played extensively last season with Pelle Larsson, Davion Mitchell and others. And Tim Hardaway Jr. feels like he's been here his entire life, even though it's his first time playing for the Heat. Plus, the coaching staff is intact from last season, and already had a style in mind. So it's very likely that the Heat start fast, and the schedule is conducive.
If the Heat can get a split of the tough two opening games at home against Detroit and Minnesota, they will be in good shape. Games against the Hornets and Mavericks are on the softer side, and the first West coast trip isn't as daunting as most -- the Kings, Clippers and Warriors are all dealing with significant injuries, and none projected as powers before that. Let's say 7-3, with a shot at 8-2."
