Aakash Chopra, Ajinkya Rahane offer contrasting views on Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s comeback

Aakash Chopra questions Bhuvneshwar Kumar's T20I comeback after the pacer was dropped from the fourth match against New Zealand, citing poor performances and a concerning pattern.

At Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, October 30, India made a significant change to their bowling attack for the fourth T20I against New Zealand. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who had returned to international cricket after a four-year absence, was dropped from the playing XI and replaced by Mayank Yadav. The decision came after the experienced pacer managed just one wicket across the first three matches while conceding 139 runs at an economy rate of 11.58.

Bhuvneshwar's domestic form had been impressive. For Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 2026 season, he was retained for ₹10.75 crores and finished as the franchise's leading wicket-taker with 28 wickets in 16 matches. Yet his return to the international stage has not replicated those performances. Mayank Yadav, his replacement, claimed three wickets in the fourth match, though he conceded 48 runs in four overs as New Zealand posted 259 for seven.

Aakash Chopra, analysing the situation, suggested that India's management had effectively signalled the end of Bhuvneshwar's comeback attempt. Chopra noted that while Prasidh Krishna was unavailable due to injury, Bhuvneshwar's own selection had become questionable given his recent form.

"Prasidh Krishna has not been selected in the ODI team because he is injured. But, it’s not like Bhuvi has been picked in the one-day team. He has played three matches and has leaked so many runs that questions are being asked about his comeback. Amidst all this, he has been made to sit out, which only raises further questions about his comeback," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

What Chopra said about the management's stance

Chopra went further in his assessment, suggesting that India's management had effectively signalled the end of Bhuvneshwar's comeback attempt by dropping him from the fourth match. The analyst believed the decision reflected a broader frustration with the pacer's inability to deliver at the international level after his long absence.

"It almost seems like the Indian management is saying we have had enough. So, this comeback is not turning out the way the Indian fans were hoping for. It seems that there is a slight break here as far as his comeback is concerned," Chopra said.

Ajinkya Rahane, the former India batter, offered a contrasting perspective on Bhuvneshwar's situation. Rather than viewing the drop as a definitive statement, Rahane cautioned against hasty judgement and emphasised the importance of patience with an experienced player navigating his return to international cricket. He stressed that ups and downs are natural in any bowler's career.

"I don’t think we should judge him or overthink how he has bowled. He is an experienced player and would certainly reflect on where he fell short and what he could have done better. As far as his performances are concerned, ups and downs are part of the game. Sometimes, as a bowler, you may not find your rhythm, but that is no reason to write him off. Bhuvneshwar Kumar would certainly know what he could have done better," Rahane said.

Rahane highlighted the significance of Bhuvneshwar's comeback itself, viewing it as an inspirational narrative regardless of immediate results. He stressed that the pacer's experience and self-awareness would guide his path forward, and that one strong performance could shift the narrative entirely.

"For me, the biggest story is that he has made a comeback at this age. We should learn from this that, as a bowler, you must never give up. Keep doing your job, and things will eventually fall into place. You never know; he could take five wickets in the next match, and things could change immediately. Bhuvneshwar is a bowler who certainly reflects on his game, but he is also confident in his abilities and is a confident person overall," Rahane said.
