More standout swimmers entered include Olympic medalists Gretchen Walsh, Alex Walsh, Regan Smith, Katharine Berkoff, Jack Alexy, Ilya Kharun and Luke Hobson, plus 2025 World champion Luca Urlando and 2026 breakout star Van Mathias.
The top two swimmers in each event make the team, plus more in the 100m and 200m freestyles for relays, so long as the overall roster does not exceed 20 men and 20 women. They also have to meet international time standards for their event.
Short course swimming is held in 25-meter pools rather than 50-meter pools used at the Olympics.
USA Swimming previously picked short course world teams not with a trials meet, but by inviting swimmers based on best long course times.
At the most recent short course worlds in 2024, Gretchen Walsh broke 11 world records (nine individual) and won seven gold medals. She is the current world record holder in the short course 50m free, 50m butterfly, 100m fly and 100m individual medley.
