The Uncomfortable Kelechi Iheanacho Celtic Question

Kasper Høgh and Kelechi Iheanacho are rapidly becoming an awkward comparison for Celtic.

Høgh arrived from Bodø/Glimt for a club-record fee of £11 million plus add-ons. That kind of money changes the level of scrutiny straight away.

For more, catch up on the latest Celtic news.

Celtic paid record money for a centre-forward expected to lead the line and make a difference.

So far, the numbers make uncomfortable reading.

Høgh has scored three goals and provided one assist in 807 minutes across all competitions this season.

All three goals came in one match against Kilmarnock.

Outside that hat-trick, he has played ten times without scoring.

That is where the Iheanacho comparison becomes hard to ignore.

Iheanacho left Celtic after last season, but his numbers in Glasgow were better than some may remember.

In 2025/26, he scored nine goals and added one assist in 890 minutes across all competitions.

That works out at a goal every 99 minutes.

Høgh, by comparison, is currently scoring once every 269 minutes.

Even allowing for different roles, different games and different stages of the season, that gap is hard to ignore.

Iheanacho was not always a guaranteed starter at Celtic. He missed time through injury and often had to make his impact in short spells.

Yet he still found goals.

He scored in the league, in Europe, and in the Scottish Cup. His cup return was especially sharp, with three goals in just 69 minutes.

Høgh has not yet shown that same knack of finding a finish when Celtic need one.

The concern is not only the goals total.

The Kilmarnock hat-trick showed what he can do when chances fall his way, but Celtic have not seen enough outside that afternoon.

In Europe, the concern has grown.

Høgh has played in the Champions League qualifiers and Europa League without scoring. Against Benfica, he hit the post from close range when Celtic had a huge chance to get back into the match, then lost possession before Benfica’s third goal.

That was the kind of night that brings pressure onto a striker quickly.

It also comes at a time when Camilo Durán is giving Martin O’Neill a real decision.

Durán scored in Lisbon, hit the woodwork twice, and looked more threatening when he moved into central areas.

O’Neill has already said he believes Durán’s best position is through the middle.

If Høgh is not scoring, and Durán is starting to look like Celtic’s most dangerous attacking option, the manager has to think about the balance of the front line.

The uncomfortable question is not whether Høgh has talent.

He clearly does.

The question is whether Celtic have spent record money on a striker who is still searching for the level of impact the club needed immediately.

Iheanacho’s numbers make that harder to dismiss.

That is the issue Celtic now face.

When a player arrives for £11 million plus add-ons, patience comes with a limit.

Høgh still has time to turn it round, and one good run could quickly change the tone around him.

But the comparison with Iheanacho is already there, and after another blank in Lisbon, it is only getting louder.
