Curtis Gregory stamps on his opponents outstretched leg
Thursday night's Super Rygbi Cymru match between Llandovery and Ebbw Vale was marred by an appalling act of violence that left viewers disgusted.
Ebbw Vale's Curtis Gregory was given a straight red card for a stamp that beggared belief in its stupidity and ferocity, leaving his opponent lucky to escape without serious injury.
Gregory aimed a vicious stamp on the outstretched leg of a Llandovery player at a ruck after his leg was briefly held by his opponent, sparking a confrontation in the immediate aftermath.
Referee Craig Evans stepped in immediately in the 35th minute and delivered his verdict, telling Ebbw Vale's captain: "We have a stamp by this player. I did ask the question if anything aggravated it. My AR (assistant referee) didn't see anything. It's a stamp on the leg. Red card. Permanent."
Replays of the incident drew groans from the S4C commentators, while viewers at home were appalled.
Fans on social media branded the incident "vile", "horrific" and "disgraceful", with many calling for a long ban.
Another said: "Absolutely thick and very dangerous."
"The worst thing I've seen in a while," added another viewer.
A further comment said: "Difficult to know how long to ban Curtis Gregory for here. But it has to be long. Very long. One of the most vindictive things I’ve seen in sport."
Despite losing a man so early in the game while 8-0 down, and going on to be reduced to 13 later in the match, the visitors somehow pulled off a remarkable comeback to win the match 31-15 with 31 unanswered points.
Second row Gregory is now likely to face a huge ban.
