Even a basketball superstar can take a loss in the property market. LeBron James, one of the NBA’s most celebrated players, sold his Brentwood home in Los Angeles for $19.6 million in September 2021, receiving less than the nearly $21 million he had paid for it six years earlier. The gated mansion offered a glimpse into the lifestyle of an elite athlete, with six bedrooms, a private gym, a swimming pool and even a basketball hoop. The sale, reported by Realtor.com, was an off-market transaction. The NBA star had listed the property for $20.5 million in March 2021 before selling it for a lower price, according to the publication.
Built in 2011, the traditional-style residence covered approximately 9,440 square feet and sat on a half-acre lot in Brentwood, a sought-after neighbourhood on Los Angeles’ Westside. According to Realtor.com, the six-bedroom house featured two family rooms and a primary suite with a sitting room, terrace, en-suite bathroom and two closets. Oakwood floors, detailed ceilings and multiple fireplaces added to its traditional design.
The property also included formal living and dining rooms, a kitchen with a breakfast nook, and a family room opening onto a heated loggia. A media room, panelled library, elevator and three-car garage rounded out the interior amenities. Outside, the grounds featured a lap pool, spa and poolside cabana, along with expansive views. For a professional basketball player, however, one feature stood out: a basketball hoop that served as a reminder of the owner’s career.
The mansion’s gym was particularly fitting for an athlete whose career depends on maintaining strength, conditioning and agility. The property also offered extensive leisure facilities, allowing its residents to work out and relax without leaving home. LeBron James’ approach to real estate has reflected his changing professional life. The Los Angeles Times reported in December 2017 that he purchased a second Brentwood residence for $23 million. That contemporary property measured 15,846 square feet and included eight bedrooms, 9.5 bathrooms, a home theatre, wine cellar, cigar room and sauna. The two Brentwood properties were separate homes, and the 2021 sale did not mean James had left the neighbourhood entirely.
LeBron James bought the traditional-style mansion in 2015 for $20,986,500, according to Realtor.com. Its eventual $19.6 million sale meant the transaction price was roughly $1.4 million below his original purchase price, before accounting for other expenses such as taxes, maintenance and transaction costs. The sale came after James had acquired a Beverly Hills property for $36.8 million in 2020. Realtor.com described the Brentwood transaction as a “slight loss”, while noting that the basketball star had already moved on from the residence.
LeBron's property holdings have included residences in Ohio, Miami and Los Angeles. Architectural Digest, in a July 2026 overview of his real estate portfolio, reported that he bought his first Brentwood home for about $21 million in 2015 and sold it in 2021. It also detailed his separate $23.5 million Brentwood purchase in 2017 and his Beverly Hills compound, acquired for $36.8 million in 2020.
