The Golden State Valkyries are WNBA champions after beating the Atlanta Dream 68-63 in Game 7 of the Finals on Saturday at Chase Center. Gabby Williams exploded for 30 points and 4 blocks and was named Finals MVP as the Valkyries came back from a 30-24 halftime deficit to close out the series.

One of the Dream’s co-owners was part of the broadcast that night. Renee Montgomery, an 11-year WNBA veteran, worked USA Network’s Game 7 postgame coverage as a studio analyst in what was the network’s first year carrying the Finals.

After the final buzzer, Courtside Club host Rachel DeMita gave a pointed response to that arrangement, and fans lined up behind her.

WNBA Fans in Support of Rachel DeMita’s Critique on Renee Montgomery’s Dual Role During Finals

DeMita did not mince words about the broadcast setup, posting: “Having one of the Dream’s owners host the postgame show is actually diabolical.”

One hoops fan answered the Courtside Club host with a blunt two-word verdict: “Unserious league.”

When Atlanta clinched its Finals berth, Montgomery, who shares ownership of the Dream with Larry Gottesdiener, Robyn Gottesdiener, and Suzanne Abair, was on the sideline celebrating with the players and was a regular at the team’s home games.

“I love the sport so much that you have to cover it a certain way … So whether or not that player is playing for the Atlanta Dream doesn’t matter. I have to analyze the game for what I see,” she told Front Office Sports.

On the question of her employers, the Dream co-owner added, “I’m sure that if I had companies that I worked for that felt like there was a bias, I’m sure that they would let me know.”

Another fan agreed with DeMitaand looked back at the whole series: “Having to listen to them glaze the Dream for 7 games was yet another reason not to watch any of the Finals.”

One observer pointed to the position the loss left Montgomery in: “It’s so bizarre. Just by human nature, she’s obviously very upset that her team just lost Game 7 of the WNBA Finals, but is she the only one that USA Network could’ve hired in all of basketball of former players? It doesn’t make sense.”

One user kept their objection brief and wrote, “She shouldn’t have been part of the Finals coverage to begin with.”

During the game, another fan aimed the criticism at the league itself: “Explain why the WNBA allows Renee Montgomery, a Dream co-owner, in the studio with her team playing in the final. I want this league to thrive, but they do the most unprofessional stuff.”

The broadest complaint went beyond Montgomery entirely: “The W doesn’t have 1 decent pre- or postgame show. Not one. They are all garbage.”

On the court, the night belonged to Golden State. The Valkyries won the first Game 7 in WNBA Finals history, and no expansion team had ever won a Finals in only its second season.

The Finals MVP Williams carried the comeback, scoring 28 of her 30 points after halftime, the most points any player has scored in one half of a WNBA postseason game. Kiah Stokes added 8 points and 13 rebounds, finishing the series with 18 blocks, a Finals record.

Atlanta, meanwhile, heads into the offseason still chasing its first title after falling to 0-4 in WNBA Finals appearances.
