Dallas fans have become familiar with the frustration of watching their team lose control of games they once seemed certain to win. The collapse against the Arizona Cardinals brought those feelings back, with questions now reaching head coach Brian Schottenheimer and his decisions late in games.
But when Pittsburgh Steelers legend Mike Tomlin weighed in on their dramatic Week 8 slip-up, his comments gave fans a fresh reason to wonder whether Dallas needs a different voice leading the team.
Tomlin discussed Dallas’ 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals on NBC’s “Football Night in America.”
The Cowboys had carried a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter but could not close out the game. Tomlin questioned the team’s response when the pressure increased, using one of his familiar phrases to describe players who fail to deliver in key moments.
“I saw a bunch of blinkers,” Tomlin said. “You gotta relish the thick moments. You gotta want to make the play, as an individual, as a unit, within a team.”
He also criticized Dallas’ offense for going three-and-out in overtime and failing to take advantage of the short field after Arizona’s unsuccessful onside kick attempt.
His closing advice was unmistakably direct: “They blinked. They gotta cut their eyelids off.”
The comments soon prompted speculation about Tomlin’s interest in the Cowboys job.
Timm ‘IndyCarTim’ Hamm pointed to the timing of the criticism, writing, “Mike Tomlin might not have submitted a résumé to Jerry Jones, but his latest television appearance certainly gave Dallas Cowboys fans something to think about.”
Other fans were more direct about wanting him in Dallas. The Sleeper Cowboys account posted, “Bro wants the job (plz save us).”
One fan shared a similar thought: “I think he just applied for the job.”
Not everyone viewed Tomlin’s remarks as a possible audition.
NFL analyst Marcus Mosher pushed back against the attention given to the phrase, writing, “This is the same phrase that Tomlin has been saying for years. It doesn’t mean anything. It’s just coach speak. Please give us actual analysis.”
Another fan agreed with Tomlin’s assessment but connected the Cowboys’ problems to ownership. “Love Tomlin and he’s 100% right. This is what happens when the owners want a coach they think they can easily influence; you end up with a coach not alpha enough to build a culture, and this team’s culture is more fragile than a leaf,” the fan wrote.
The speculation comes as Schottenheimer faces mounting pressure.
Dallas fell to 3-5 after the Arizona defeat, continuing a pattern of late-game problems. Quarterback Dak Prescott also said he wished the offense (fourth in PFN’s NFL Offense Impact Metric%20assigns,red%20zone%20and%20third%20downs.) with an 84.5 grade) had been more aggressive down the stretch.
Still, owner and general manager Jerry Jones has ruled out an in-season coaching change, at least for now. He called the loss “an indictment of the whole show” and defended Schottenheimer, saying, “A lot of people let Brian down today.”
