It isn't lost on New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel that Drake Maye is doing more with less on the football field.
On Sunday, the third-year quarterback engineered a second-half comeback win over the Miami Dolphins on the road while missing wideouts A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Mack Hollins and tight end Hunter Henry. He was also playing behind a makeshift offensive line, starting reserves at both guard positions.
Despite all of the injuries, Maye put the offense on his back and overcame a 10-point deficit to knock off the Dolphins in the rain at Hard Rock Stadium 24-19. He went 9-for-10 passing for 146 yards and accounted for three total touchdowns in the second half.
It was the ultimate gut-check performance.
“You wanna be a great quarterback in the National Football League, there’s not a whole lot of excuses," Vrabel said after the game. "You go out there and you find ways to win for your football team. I know that that’s who he is and what he wants to continue to be. He throws to the open guy, and controls our offense, and gets guys in the right spots. That’s called being one of the best quarterbacks in the league. That’s what the job description requires.”
Maye has undoubtedly played like one of the best quarterbacks in recent weeks.
He outdueled Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills at Orchard Park, nearly upstaged Caleb Williams and the Bears on a short week in Chicago and held off the Dolphins with multiple starters out. That goes without mentioning the blowout win over the Las Vegas Raiders and knocking off the New York Jets. Maye is everything the Patriots hoped he would be at quarterback when they drafted him.
And maybe more.
