Getafe president Angel Torres has confirmed that the La Liga side have made a ‘final offer’ to Jadon Sancho in the hopes of signing the former Manchester United star on a free transfer.
Article continues under the videoSancho has been without a club since leaving United in June, with the Red Devils opting against triggering the one-year extension in his contract despite signing him in 2021 for €85 million.
Having struggled to prove his credentials in the Premier League with a loan spell at Aston Villa last season, Sancho has found top flight interest in Europe to be limited but Getafe look to be frontrunners for the winger’s signature.
Reports had emerged during the week that Getafe were exploring a deal for Sancho after agreeing to sign former Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal and Torres has confirmed that a formal approach has been made.
When asked about the speculation surrounding Sancho, Torres told Cadena Cope radio: "That's absolutely true; I've been working on this for four months. He's now a free agent. We've made him a final offer.
"He's 26 years old, he's very good, so this [signing] is a bit trickier. He's previously played for Manchester [United] and Aston Villa, so it's not as if he's coming from anywhere. I know he's got offers from Qatar and from a number of other places.
"We need to be patient, not put pressure on him, and let him decide for himself."
Once touted as one of the brightest young talents in world football, Sancho has endured a dramatic fall from grace since leaving Dortmund for United but the former England international is desperate to find a new club and get back to playing football.
Sancho posted on social media recently of him working on his fitness, potentially in anticipation of resolving his future soon, with Getafe believing they can have similar success of reiving his career like they did with Mason Greenwood previously.
Having been among United’s highest earners prior to his departure, Sancho’s wage demands of around €4m have reportedly been an issue for Getafe, with La Liga’s salary cap rules meaning the club needs to guarantee the affordability of any deal.
But, with Sancho only having serious offers from teams in the Middle East, Getafe are optimistic of being able to tempt the player into a lower deal in order to keep him playing top flight and continental football in one of Europe’s major leagues.
