DeVonta Smith has been managing a hamstring injury that has already kept him out of two games this season, and questions over whether the Philadelphia Eagles will shut him down for the remainder of the year are now part of the conversation heading into Monday night against Dallas.
The Eagles are already without Jalen Hurts, leaving the offense thin at two of its most important positions. Head coach Nick Sirianni was asked directly about a potential Smith shutdown on Saturday and offered little clarity on what comes next, leaving fans to spiral online.
Smith tweaked his hamstring during training camp in early August and missed roughly two weeks before returning healthy for the start of the regular season. He reaggravated the injury in Week 2 and played through it for a period before the Eagles sat him for back-to-back games against the Rams and Jaguars in Weeks 4 and 5.
He returned in Week 6 against Carolina, catching seven passes for 75 yards and a touchdown with Tanner McKee under center, but did not practice this week and has been ruled out for Monday night against Dallas.
When asked directly about a potential shutdown, Sirianni did not commit either way. “Just want him to continue to get better. We’ll see where that goes. He works extremely hard,” the head coach said.
Reactions came in quickly once the comment made the rounds online. Some fans were pessimistic about what it could mean for Philadelphia’s season going forward.
“The Eagles season is over. NFC East is wide open!” said one fan.
Another user took the view that this was the right moment for Philadelphia to step back from the season entirely.
“Just shut him down for the year. The Eagles should just take this opportunity and throw this season away and get the best 1st round draft pick we can for the draft. We aren’t going to do anything with this really banged up team this season anyway,” wrote the user.
Some fans were in despair over Smith’s situation alongside everything else going wrong in Philadelphia this year.
“First Jalen Hurts now they wanna shut down my goat DeVonta Smith. 2020 has nothing on this season for the Eagles 😫,” posted one fan.
“If they shut down DeVonta for the season, you might as well just cancel the games 😭,” said another dejected fan.
Fans were not happy with the non-committal tone of the update from Sirianni either.
“I don’t know if Nick has answered a question honestly in 6 years,” quipped one fan.
“Boys tanking,” commented another.
When healthy, Smith has been a decent presence in the Eagles’ offense this season.
According to PFN’s WR Impact Metric, Smith ranks 34th among wide receivers with a grade of 74.8, hauling in 26 receptions for 310 yards and two touchdowns on 41 targets for Philly.
The Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field.
