Intriguing Dallas Cowboys Pass Rush Trade Option Emerges in New Deadline Rumor, But There’s One Major Issue

With the Dallas Cowboys in desperate need of players who can get to the quarterback, they have been consistently linked to a trade for one-time Pro Bowler Josh Sweat. However, a new rumor offers up a different option that may be just as good and more cap-friendly. However, they won’t come cheap.

This has not been the season the Cowboys expected. After having one of the elite passing offenses last year, they expected similar numbers in 2026. And thus far, Dak Prescott and his receivers have been just as good. However, they expected far more out of a defense they worked hard to improve since the trade deadline last season.

Yet as they head into the Week 8 schedule, they are giving up the third-most yards and close to 26 points a game. While their secondary has not been good, they are getting very little from their pass rush. They are tied for dead last in the NFL with just seven sacks as a team. Clearly, they need all the help they can get and have been linked to various trade rumors.

The name that keeps popping up the most when it comes to potential Cowboys targets is the Arizona Cardinals defensive end. However, there is risk in a trade for Sweat because the nine-year veteran’s best day may be behind him, and he also still has two years and close to $50 million left on his contract.

With so much money already invested in various stars and the team still hoping to give George Pickens a new long-term deal, it would be great if they could add a young pass rusher with upside and an affordable contract. Well, an option just like that may be available.

Should the Dallas Cowboys target a Chop Robinson trade?

In a new reader Q&A post, Tom Pelissero was asked by a Miami Dolphins fan if the team might consider trading EDGE Chop Robinson. In response, the NFL insider wrote, “The Dolphins are in year one of a multiyear rebuild, so they owe it to themselves to explore every avenue for improving in the medium to long term. I certainly expect strong interest in edge rusher Chop Robinson, among others.”

While the 2024 first-round pick’s numbers don’t jump off the stat sheet, as a non-starter over his first two seasons, they show a lot of promise. In his rookie year, he played in 17 games. Posting 6 sacks, 14 QB hits, and 4 passes defended. In his first season as a full-time starter this year, he has 2 sacks and 8 QB hits in 5 games. Robinson has a lot of potential as a pass rusher.

Furthermore, he is only 23 years old, is signed for another season at just $4.7 million, and still has his fifth-year rookie option. That may be part of why Pelissero suggests it won’t be easy to acquire Robinson in a trade.

“The Dolphins won’t give him away,” the NFL insider wrote. “There is a fine line between rebuilding and stripping things so far down that you can’t compete. The Dolphins have been competitive in every game and are coming off their first win under first-year HC Jeff Hafley… I wouldn’t rule out anything, but I don’t foresee a ton of movement in Miami.”
