Six weeks of NFL action are complete, and several stars are still for the year-end NFL MVP Award. But with just one-third of the season wrapped up for most teams, much remains to be decided on the gridiron. Let's look at the players currently leading the race for the league's top individual honor.
The Bills secured a statement win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, moving to 6-1 while looking like the top team in the NFL. Allen looked like a star in that win, passing for 289 yards and two touchdowns while adding 30 rushing yards and one touchdown. He now has 1,793 passing yards, 270 rushing yards, and 20 total touchdowns this season.
It's hard to move Smith-Njigba down this week, but it's also hard to see a wide receiver win MVP on a team that's currently just .500 through eight games. But Smith-Njigba kept up his historic season with six receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Bears. He still leads the league with 985 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns.
Purdy saw no upward movement this week as he enjoyed a bye week for the 49ers. But nothing about his performance this season suggests he should drop from the top five. Purdy still has 1,748 passing yards and 15 passing touchdowns for a 6-1 49ers team that appears to be the cream of the crop in the NFC.
Goff didn't have his best week, throwing for 176 yards and one touchdown, and throwing his first interception. But the Lions are 5-2 after knocking off the undefeated Vikings to keep up momentum in a tight NFC North divisional race, and Goff is still among the league's top 10 with 1,964 passing yards and 15 passing touchdowns.
Burrow passed for 462 yards and five touchdowns while also adding a rushing touchdown in a dynamic performance against the Titans, but he also threw three interceptions in the win. But regardless of those slip-ups, the Bengals are now 5-2 and in the thick of the AFC North race – and Burrow has been massive in helping get them to that point, leading the NFL in touchdown passes, total touchdowns, and completion percentage this season.
