Are Man Utd unmanageable? Michael Carrick speaks as club face prospect of another sacking
Michael Carrick is under pressure at Man Utd

Seven permanent managers in 13 years. A fair few interims in between that as well. Manchester United have tried it all, but with little to no success.

The odd FA Cup, a Carabao Cup here and there, Europa League success was perhaps as good as it got. But sandwiched in with all that is managers having to deal with constant outside noise, often from former United players, and issues of in-fighting, often between themselves and members of the squad.

Michael Carrick is the latest to see his players call out issues within the club. He's had it twice in the space of a fortnight. Lisandro Martinez took aim, largely at the hierarchy, but the attack from Bruno Fernandes was very much aimed at Carrick.

This is a team with two wins in 11, accusations of cultural problems that have spanned years and an environment that has been described as a "graveyard" for talent.

So are Manchester United an unmanageable club? "No," was Carrick's simple answer.

Of course, he kind of has to say that. Would be a bit of a paradox had he himself chosen to manage a club that he deems is beyond managing.

He's been part of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era as a player. He was there for David Moyes' short-lived reign. He remained for the two years of Louis van Gaal, with the Dutchman bringing glamour and an FA Cup, but a style of football that was highly criticised.

Jose Mourinho had his two and a bit seasons. During that period he'd called out record signing Paul Pogba, that famous clip in training still living on. He'd claimed that United's history wasn't as stellar as they'd like to think during his infamous "football heritage" rant. He also felt he wasn't sufficiently backed in the market.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was red through and through, very rarely complained about the state of the club, but undoubtedly lost the dressing room with the players' performance nosediving before his sacking.

Erik ten Hag was almost given too much room to manage the club, which meant he was allowed to spend £81million on Antony, £72m on Ramus Hojlund and £47m on Andre Onana. So whether the manager gets all the say, or very little of the say, it seems to make no difference to the club's fortunes.

Ruben Amorim left, with a dire record, after a fiery press conference where he demanded to work as a manager "not the coach" - but equally was ready to leave when his contract expired in 18 months' time. He was sacked the following day.

And so to Carrick, whose sensational interim spell landed him the top job. This year though he's found it much tougher going, perhaps owing to the fact he has to prepare for multiple competitions and not just one game a week.

The poor results off the back of that have led to clear signs of dressing room chaos. Body language tells its own story with Carrick taking the lead in Friday's press conference to demand a greater work ethic if they were to turn their fortunes around.

If they don't start soon then Carrick will be the man to pay, even if the Old Trafford hierarchy will be loathed to make another change in the dugout, which would be another admission they have, yet again, got it wrong.
