Hardik Pandya trade in decisive phase; MI rule out Suryakumar swap

Hardik Pandya's trade discussions have entered a decisive phase, even as Mumbai Indians have ruled out any possibility of Suryakumar Yadav being exchanged for another player. A potential Suryakumar swap, like the Pandya trade, has been the subject of speculation in a section of the media. The T20 World Cup-winning India captain may not have had a particularly successful season last year (270 runs in 13 matches), but he had a stellar role in the 2025 season (717 runs from 16 games). The MI management do not appear to entertain any thought of letting Suryakumar go.

“SKY is not up for trade, and there have been no discussions, nor will there be,” MI sources said, while remaining non-committal about a potential swap involving Pandya and Punjab Kings' Arshdeep Singh. PBKS sources, too, have remained tightlipped but they did not try to deny the possibility of a barter of their ace pacer with the MI captain of the last three seasons.

In the meantime, Rajasthan Royals may also have entered the picture, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi potentially featuring in the discussions. However, the Mumbai Indians management do not appear particularly interested in any proposition that does not involve a frontline fast bowler. It is unlikely that Rajasthan Royals would consider discussing Jofra Archer, although that is not to suggest that MI have sought the England pacer.

The perception so far has always been that MI are on the lookout for a batter and bowler, but it has now emerged that they could be in the transfer market for a tearaway pacer, particularly after the none-too-impressive performances of Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar last season.

Boult managed just two wickets in five matches, while Chahar finished with eight wickets in eight matches in the last season and 11 scalps in 14 matches in 2025. It would therefore not be a surprise if the five-time champions decide to release one of them, particularly the New Zealander. However, the franchise has about two weeks to take that call. So that is for another time.

With batters such as Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Sherfane Rutherford, Naman Dhir and Will Jacks, besides Mitchell Santner, who is also capable of contributing with the bat, Mumbai Indians are not exactly short of options. Most of them are likely to feature in the playing XI. This could explain why MI may not have seriously pursued someone like Chennai Super Kings’ Ayush Mhatre, for whom there would be no guaranteed place in the starting XI.

At some stage, there were discussions with Kolkata Knight Riders over Harshit Rana and a batter for Pandya but the Knight Riders were apparently unwilling to spare the pacer.

Arshdeep, the spearhead of India's T20I pace attack in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, could fit MI's current requirements, and discussions over a possible exchange have taken place. The sticking point, however, could be Pandya's own preference. A move to Punjab may not necessarily guarantee him the captaincy – Shreyas Iyer is Punjab’s skipper – whereas a switch to Rajasthan could potentially guarantee that role. Whether the player will have a choice in a trade situation is debatable. For MI, the PBKS proposition could be more enticing.

At this stage, the Punjab Kings management are unwilling to commit, and it is learnt that they have sought some time to consider the proposed trade. However, a decision may not be too far away, with the next 48 hours likely to be crucial.
