Tottenham Hotspur overhauled their defensive unit over the summer, signing Andy Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Tosin Adarabioyo. At the same time, Cristian Romero, Luka Vuskovic, Djed Spence and Kevin Danso all left the club.
However, Spurs’ new centre-backs haven’t had the desired effect on the pitch. Van Hecke and Senesi have struggled in the high-pressing system of Roberto De Zerbi. Tosin, who arrived from Chelsea on deadline day, has just one Premier League appearance so far. Those that departed, meanwhile, are doing well.
Romero has seamlessly slotted into Atletico Madrid’s backline, helping the Spanish club register five wins in a row. Vuskovic has become an instant hit at Brighton with his all-action defending, while Danso has added physicality and Premier League experience to Sunderland’s backline.
Clearly, there are still deficiencies in Spurs’ backline. This could result in the Lilywhites reviving their interest in Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger.
Spurs were heavily linked with a move for Antonio Rudiger earlier this year, but eventually decided against intensifying their interest. However, according to a report from Football Insider, the North Londoners are continuing to keep tabs on the Real Madrid star and could be prepared to move for him when his contract expires at the end of the season.
If Tottenham are to bring the 33-year-old back to the Premier League, they must convince the centre-back to snub the cash-rich Saudi Pro League. The report adds that the most likely outcome is Rudiger moves to Saudi Arabia next year.
Rudiger moved to Real Madrid on a free transfer from Chelsea in the summer of 2022. Before that, the Germany international made 203 appearances for Chelsea, and won the Champions League, Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup and the FA Cup.
The central defender has proven to be a successful signing for Real Madrid, winning multiple trophies including La Liga and the Champions League. However, Rudiger has started showing signs of ageing, with injuries piling up in the last couple of seasons. He is very much past his prime and will turn 34 in March.
Even on a potential free transfer next summer, Tottenham must avoid signing the former Chelsea man. Instead, the Hotspur Way chiefs must target younger centre-back profiles than Rudiger to improve their squad.
