FA Cup as it happened: Reading hit five against Peterborough after Notts County beat Altrincham in thick fog

Altrincham v Notts County

Thanks for joining us over the past EIGHT hours on this bumper Saturday of FA Cup first-round action!

Non-league Kidderminster Harriers will probably go down as the giantkillers of the day, comfortably beating League One Doncaster 3-0.

We still picked up memorable moments on the way, however.

The drama in the fog at Altrincham will go down in FA Cup folklore as the Robins were edged out 3-2 on penalties by Notts County.

And how close were non-league Hornchurch? The Urchins were just two minutes away from taking Blackpool to penalties after extra-time having taken the lead in the first half.

We're back for more tomorrow.

Hope you can join us then. Until then, good night all!

You'd expect Robbie Savage to have had a word with his team at half time. Taking nothing away from Reading who played the opening 45 minutes really well, but it was men against boys in the first half.

He'd have told them to compete better, pass the ball better, and Peterborough had a good spell after the break.

Mark Stallard
Ex-Notts County striker on BBC Radio Nottingham

Never before have I watched a penalty be taken and have to wait for the fans reaction nearer because I thought it went in, and you heard silence from the Altrincham supporters.

Almost farcical, chaotic scenes - five penalties missed in the mist - but the headline is Notts are into round two!

While we continue to cover the chaos happening in Trafford right now, it's time we tee you up for our final First Round offering this evening as Peterborough host Reading in an all League One tie.

Reading midfielder Charlie Savage starts for the Royals against Peterborough United who are now managed by his dad, Robbie, in a family affair at London Road.

Posh are in the midst of a poor run of form, losing three of their last four matches in all competitions, and still licking their wounds following a disappointing 2-0 defeat by Luton Town at home last Saturday.

Fellow third-tier outfit Reading picked up a point on the road at Plymouth last Saturday but went down at Oxford United in midweek. Leam Richardson's men are unbeaten in their last four away matches in all competitions against Peterborough since a 6-0 hammering back in August 2013 in the League Cup.

Peterborough have won their last 16 FA Cup first round ties while Reading fell at the first hurdle just last season when they let a two-goal lead slip to lose 3-2 at home to National League Carlisle United after extra-time.

We're looking around and here in the press box, no-one knows where the ball is! It's like a Spot-the-ball competition.

I played in the Notts County Cup side against Wimbledon when it was abandoned, they equalised in the second half and I didn't see any of it!

Notts earn a free-kick in a dangerous position, centre of goal about 25 yards out.

Scott Robertson fires it goalwards, but the wall does its job and deflects the shot out for a corner.

More danger as the set-piece is floated to the back post where the unmarked Lucas Ness stretches to meet it but blazes over.

A cup tie from which both sides emerge with credit.

Burton Albion deserve acclaim for the professionalism with which they avoided becoming a slain giant.

Predictably, they dominated against a team 115 places below them, but made sure to take their chances too and neutralise AFC Rushden & Diamonds’ understandable enthusiasm.

The noisy travelling support made up half the 4,000 crowd, and 40 year-old Billy Sharp - tempted out of retirement for the occasion - came agonising close to rewarding them with a 300th professional goal.

Even without that moment the Diamonds were serenaded for several minutes after the full-time whistle, those the follow the phoenix club appreciative of a memorable, eight-game run in the FA Cup.

Altrincham have been here before. Many times.

Their record of knocking out 17 Football League opponents in the competition is more than any other club which has spent its entire life in non-league football.

An 18th is by no means out of the question as they host Notts County in round one.

Alty sit handily placed in seventh in the National League, 38 places below today's visitors who themselves have had a mixed start to life in League One this term.

The Magpies - who lifted the trophy just the 132 years ago - have won four of their last five FA Cup ties against non-league opponents in the competition proper.

But last season's first-round defeat at Brackley Town - also in the Saturday teatime slot - will remain fresh and raw in the memory of County fans.

Newport County are in the hat for the second round having inflicted a first away defeat of the season on fellow League Two side Walsall.

Andrew Dallas gave the visitors the perfect start when his fine volley opened the scoring just eight minutes in.

But two goals in four minutes put County in control after just 23 minutes. Kion Etete capitalised on some sloppy defensive play from Lee Grant's side and Michael Adu-Poku steered his effort, at the second attempt, into the far corner after a Harrison Biggins free-kick.

Biggins' free-kicks caused havoc throughout and it was that route again that proved profitable with Etete grabbing his second on the hour mark.

Hayden Mullins' side's impressive home form remains intact, losing just once at Rodney Parade in the EFL Trophy last Tuesday.

That is where Walsall's attention now turns as they travel to Leicester City in a West Midlands Derby on Tuesday knowing a win can seal their progress in that competition.

But, it was Newport's day and the Amber Army loved every second it as the Exiles reach the second round for the second consecutive season at the expense of Walsall, who fail to reach round two for the first time in six years.

What a wonderful afternoon for Kidderminster Harriers!

And they made it look pretty comfortable as well.

They had this tie sewn up by the hour-mark when David Davis fired home a rebound inside the box.

That came after first-half goals from Lewis Walker and Maz Kouhyar. The Harriers players are rightly applauding off the pitch by the home fans for their efforts.

A day to forget for League One Doncaster who have now lost five of their last six in all comps.

The Carlisle fans find their voice as they will their side to hold on and complete a mini cup upset.

31 places separate the sides don't forget.

The Ammies came here as big favourites, but Carlisle's recent good run of form looks set to continue.

James Mason
Former Bradford City Chief Executive

Will Swan again, as the Bradford City fans would sing. And another great goal.

This is turning into a nearly perfect day for Michael Duff and Bradford City, but for the injury to Bobby Pointon, and the missed penalty for Lapslie.

James Mason
Former Bradford City Chief Executive

Missed penalty - What a shame for George Lapslie. We thought it was written in the stars, especially after his interview this week - showing some vulnerabilities, showing how hard it is to play with expectation.

He won the penalty, but didn't look too confident over it, and the keeper made himself big.

The shock is most certainly on at Aggborough.

And Kidderminster have fully merited their two-goal lead.

First, Lewis Walker's low strike found the corner before Walker turned from goal-scorer to provider, finding Maz Kouhyar in the middle and the winger coolly buried his opportunity.

Big 15 minutes for Grant McCann to sort his side out at half-time.

Former Bradford City Chief Executive

That is just what Nick Powell needed, and just what Michael Duff needed, too. He's said Powell is the best striker at the club, and with form like this - he could be the best striker in this division.

I know that might be challenged by his age (32) but he've seen his quality in the opening few minutes - a fine header and a side-footed goal.

Goal for the visitors to silence the home crowd.

Elicha Ahui's cross creates danger in the Newport penalty area.

Aaron Pressley's header falls kindly to Andrew Dallas who hammers home a volley beyond goalkeeper Jordan Wright.

That is the fourth time in their last five games Newport have conceded within the opening ten minutes.

Stephen Denny, Alvechurch's club secretary, poses with a half and half scarf which reads 'Alvechurch v Plymouth', at Home Park

What a story this is for a seventh-tier village football club from Worcestershire - and you can see how proud their club secretary Stephen Denny is.

Alvechurch have reached the FA Cup first round for only the fourth time in their history and in doing so, they now travel to Home Park where they will play at the biggest stadium the club has entered for many a year.

The Church, who are currently sixth in the Southern League Premier Division Central, did make it to the second round in 2022-23 before they were beaten 2-1 by Forest Green Rovers.

An unlikely victory today for Alvechurch would mark their second-best ever run in the competition since reaching the third round in 1973-74.

Standing in their way is a Plymouth side with aspirations of winning promotion to the Championship this season.

Argyle are currently fifth in League One and a whopping 97 league places above Alvechurch on the football pyramid - and their last FA Cup tie at home? A 1-0 win over Liverpool in February 2025.
