The Houston Texans scored a big win over division rivals the Jacksonville Jaguars in the final NFL London game of 2026, spearheaded by quarterback C.J. Stroud
C.J. Stroud decided to Bet Big on himself this past offseason, with the Houston Texans shelving contract negotiations on a potential extension exceeding $300 million.
Stroud, 25, is playing out the final year of his four-year, $36.28 million rookie contract, having been drafted by the Texans second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. The quarterback turned in a rookie campaign to remember, throwing for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns as the Texans reached the divisional round on his way to scooping Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
His first season was so good that Stroud found himself in NFL MVP conversations. However, the following two seasons saw a steady decline in Stroud’s production, raising serious questions about the quarterback, particularly in the postseason.
Last season, the Texans asserted themselves as Super Bowl contenders, largely thanks to one of the best defenses the NFL has seen in recent years. The team turned around a 0-3 start to reach the playoffs, and the season looked promising for a Super Bowl run.
The Texans got past the Steelers in the Wild Card round, but what followed against the New England Patriots was a meltdown of epic proportions from Houston’s franchise quarterback. Stroud threw four interceptions in the 28-16 defeat as a golden opportunity to reach the AFC Championship game went up in smoke.
And so, when contract negotiations over a mega-money contract extension opened, it was little to no surprise to see that Stroud and the Texans found themselves at an impasse.
Stroud’s camp was reportedly seeking a contract exceeding $60M annually, which would make him one of the most expensive NFL players in the league’s history.
However, the Texans were unwilling to negotiate beyond $50-$55M, leading to the quarterback deciding to Bet Big on himself and play out his final year in hopes of persuading Houston that he’s worth the Big Bux.
A 0-4 start to 2026 wasn’t ideal for the Texans. But for the second consecutive campaign, Stroud appears to be turning the ship’s course away from disaster and to a fourth consecutive playoff birth.
Individually, Stroud is quietly having one of the most impressive campaigns in the NFL. He put on a controlled performance against early Super Bowl contenders, the Jacksonville Jaguars, inside London’s Wembley Stadium.
The quarterback was decisive, completing 24 of 234 throws for 312 yards and 3 touchdown passes as the Texans ran out 34-31 winners against their AFC South division rivals.
Tight end Foster Moreau proved to be Stroud’s most prolific end zone target in the first half. Moreau hauled in two touchdowns at the Jags goal line, with the second coming on the stroke of the break.
Stroud also continued to show off his impressive deep ball accuracy, connecting with both Nico Collins and Jaylin Noel on passes longer than 40 yards. The latter eventually got rewarded, extending the Texans’ lead to 24-14 in the third.
The Texans also managed to weather the storm as the Jaguars fought their way back into the game, cutting the Texans' 10-point advantage to an even 31-31 in the fourth thanks to Travis Hunter's heroics.
The two-way superstar pulled in a pass from quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the end zone before snatching a red zone interception in Stroud's next drive for the quarterback's first interception of the campaign.
In the end, Ka'imi Fairbairn won the tightly contested London clash with a 49-yard field goal. The win now puts the Texans 2-4 for the season, and well on course to turn their fortunes around, as they did last season.
In another promising sign, Stroud and Marvin Harrison Jr. rekindled their relationship from their playing days at Ohio State. The Texans traded for Harrison Jr. earlier this month, bringing the former 2024 fourth-overall pick to Houston from the Arizona Cardinals.
Harrison Jr. had spent the majority of his time in Arizona running routes down the outside. The Texans and Stroud tweaked that immediately. Harrison Jr. made three completions for 34 yards, from four targets - all in-breaking routes, to help cut apart the Jags’ defense.
The Texans will play a wounded New York Giants on home turf next weekend before enjoying a bye week. They will then return to action on Nov. 8 against the current 0-5 Los Angeles Chargers, where they could again begin dreaming of another playoff campaign.
With Stroud firing and their defense back on top form, the quarterback's case for a Big Payday at the season's end will be stronger than ever.
