Man Utd latest: Talks on Carrick's position continue after miserable weekend

After Sunday's defeat to Bournemouth, Gary Neville suggested that Michael Carrick's time as Manchester United manager could already be done and dusted, saying the feeling is that he was already a "dead man walking":

"They're probably going to sack Carrick in the next two, 12, 24 hours. There were rumours on Thursday, Friday about Jason Willcox being torn over whether the replacement will be Eddie Howe or Julian Naglesmann and Carrick is a dead man walking already.

"When he comes into his presser on Friday and starts speaking about the club's history, it just feels like the end."

Neville also questioned why Carrick felt the need to remind players of the club's history and the standards expected of them.

He said: "Don't sign a player for this club if you have to explain to them how big it is. They should be privileged to be out there."

The former United defender also argued that the supporters' anger is not simply about the results, but also the decisions being made behind the scenes.

"The history is why the fans are here," Neville added. "That's why they're angry because they can't accept the decision making, from season tickets to lack of recruitment.

"Tottenham have taken their two big targets [Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali], they should be out there wearing red shirts."

Neville also raised the question of whether a change of manager would actually address the deeper issues embedded at Manchester United.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick brushed off questions about his future when speaking with Sky Sports after Sunday's 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth.

Carrick on an emotional day at Old Trafford: "The third goal, the fans were there waiting for us to get something in the game second half if we'd got one chance, one goal in the second half they would have been with us. We just couldn't find that moment and that third goal is a killer moment. From that time it was what it was.

"It's obvious to say that - strange mixed emotions of a finish of a game. Not a nice way to end the game."

On the players' emotions: "Tough day for them - we went into the game being rocked a bit and you could feel that on the pitch. They kept going and they're disappointed, they're hurt. The players are feeling it. It's not a nice feeling when you see the disappointment. It is what it is, you have to accept it and that's the situation we're in at the moment.

"It's difficult for me to have a day like this at this club and feel the emotion - the dynamic of what it was like today. Not for me personally, but for Man Utd. It was really mixed today. I feel a lot of responsibility, I've been at the club a long time. It hurts an awful lot to see us going through this at this moment in time."

On leaving Bruno Fernandes on the bench: "There's always times when you're trying to make decisions that are to change the course of play and made a difference but those are the decisions we made today."

On his lap of the pitch at full-time: "It wasn't a farewell from me. I've mixed emotions, I'm feeling it for my players, they're going through a tough spell. Some of it we can help, some of it the situation unravels and the boys are feeling it at the moment. Mixed emotions for the supporters to respond in that way.

"To have that connection with the supporters, it's mixed emotions, it'll take a bit of time to digest but I certainly appreciate their support. The situation is where we are and we haven't had results or performances that have been good enough.

"It's a tough situation, there's no hiding from it. What it looks like and what's next I really don't know. I will always do my best for the football club and I won't change that now. I love what I do and I feel the responsibility - we'll have to wait and see."

Michael Carrick said in his post-match news conference on Sunday that he did not know if he would be staying in charge of Manchester United, but took responsibility for the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth:

Emotions after the game: "Really mixed emotions, I didn’t really expect that off the supporters but I have always felt the support and that connection with them, you are probably sick of me saying it the amount of respect I have them but it meant a lot and to go through such a difficult period, it is hard to take.

On what he said to the players: "It is not something to discuss in the changing room there is a lot of emotion in the dressing room, a lot of disappointment, a lot of the boys quite hurt. It is not that they don’t care. This is a position we find ourselves in. The ones I have spoken to it is affecting them a lot, the way it is not going our way. There is only so much, the way the game ended the atmosphere, the dynamics."

On whether he expects to stay in charge: I don’t know. I take the responsibility of course I do. I accept the responsibility, whatever happens results wise. The responsibility is mine.

On whether director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada will say anything: "It is not for me to say who speaks or when they speak. I know my role to speak to you guys and represent the football club as best as I can. The feelings of frustration and support, it gives me really mixed feelings. It was a difficult day for sure."

On whether he expects to be sacked: "I totally understand the situation. I am not expecting anything, I am carrying on as normal, I love this place, always carry on doing what I think is the best for the football club."

On whether he is shocked at how poor this season has been so far: "Certainly to get to this point there is a lot of questions to find the answers to but last season to finish third was a really good achievement in the circumstances, to get to where we did. We understood where that left us and what needed to improve and where we were at. We definitely knew we hadn’t cracked it and there was a lot of work to be done but it didn’t have to go this way

On reasons why: "Probably a number of things. If I really had the answers I wouldn’t have let it happen. I have tried to do everything I can to not be in this position but for a number of reasons we have not been able to stop that happening

"Consistency and getting a level of consistency going forward and striving for more. Consistency is everything. There is a number of things you can look at."

Jamie Carragher believed that Michael Carrick should have been relieved of his duties on Sunday night, after his Manchester United side fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth.

The former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports: "Manchester United need to make that [managerial] change tonight, they need to make that decision. The fans have taken the side of Michael Carrick and it's not about him being the manager, it's about him being a huge figure in United's history.

"Those players have done nothing compared to teams of the past, so Michael Carrick is always going to win that fight with Bruno Fernandes, and rightly so, no matter how talented a player he is.

"But also, Manchester United as a football club, one of the biggest in the world, are 16th in the Premier League right now and that can't continue.

"Michael Carrick needs to be relieved of his duties tonight - not just for the good of Manchester United, but also for the good of Michael Carrick.

"It's not nice watching him walking around the stadium at the end, he's really hurting and what's happening right now is not good for United and not good for Carrick."
