Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s upcoming showdown against Kansas City Chiefs rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane looms as one of the NFL’s premier individual matchups that is set to take shape this week, pitting the league’s leading receiver against an emerging defensive standout.
Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker listed the JSN-Delane matchup as being one of the best battles that are on the schedule for this week, and highlighted the prowess that Delane has showed throughout the first four games of his career thus far this season as being what Smith-Njigba will be tasked with playing against on Sunday.
“Delane has been everything the Chiefs could’ve hoped to start his pro campaign,” Locker said. “The sixth overall pick has compiled an 81.4 PFF coverage grade, the fifth-highest among cornerbacks with at least 120 coverage snaps. Delane has permitted only a 63.8 passer rating when targeted as well.”
Smith-Njigba enters the Week 7 contest leading the NFL in receiving yards with 717 and REC touchdowns with seven through six games played. He also leads the league in first downs this year with 36 and receptions with 49, as he’s excelled as the centerpiece of Seattle’s passing attack.
Delane, the sixth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, has impressed during his rookie year so far. Through four games played, he has totaled an interception, three passes defensed and two tackles for loss, which demonstrate the coverage ability and playmaking instincts that have made him a rising defensive star in the league.
However, Delane faces perhaps his toughest challenge yet against Smith-Njigba, the reigning AP Offensive Player of the Year. Smith-Njigba will be tasked with navigating around the length, physicality and great stride-for-stride coverage that Delane brings to the field in Week 7.
