The first two drives went about as terribly as possible for the Washington Commanders against the Philadelphia Eagles. They had excellent field position to start their first drive after Luke McCaffrey’s 44-yard kickoff return. However, they failed to capitalize after missing a field goal.
On their second drive, Washington went three-and-out after two straight incompletions on second and third down. The third drive was even worse, ending in a lost fumble that ultimately led to an Eagles touchdown. After those first three drives, quarterback Jayden Daniels gathered his teammates on the sidelines and expressed his frustration, hoping to turn things around.
“Honestly, it was complete BS, just how we started and what we were doing. We had a promising drive the first drive and missed a lot of penalties and stuff like that. And then second drive, we get behind the sticks with a lot of pre-snap penalties and then the fumble,” Daniels said. “Wasn’t our brand of football that we want to play or showcase and it was at that point, kind of, it did get frustrating. You go up and you got to [speak] your mind. So, it’s kind of what I did and kind of just, I guess help snap everybody back into place and we were able to put together and score 13 straight.”
It worked. It was an outstanding show of leadership from Daniels.
After Philadelphia’s touchdown, the Commanders finished the game with 27 unanswered points to win 27-10. It was their largest victory against the Eagles since November of 2012 when they defeated Philadelphia 31-6. Robert Griffin III was Washington’s quarterback in that game, while Nick Foles was the Eagles’ starting quarterback because their usual starter, Michael Vick, was injured.
Washington will look to build on that momentum with a win against the Los Angeles Rams. The Commanders haven’t defeated the Rams since September 2017.
