Pressure is mounting at Manchester United ahead of a potentially pivotal match with Chelsea this Saturday. Michael Carrick finds himself on extremely thin ice after back-to-back defeats by three-goal margins. United are currently on a woeful eight-match winless streak, leaving Carrick's future in severe jeopardy. To compound matters, discord has been developing behind closed doors, with continuing tension between the manager and Bruno Fernandes.
The United captain was dramatically relegated to the substitutes' bench for Sunday's 3-0 loss to Bournemouth after he openly criticised Carrick's tactics following their 4-1 hammering by Como four days prior.
With the Red Devils sitting just a point clear of the Premier League drop zone, the pressure around Old Trafford has reached fever pitch. Express Sport brings you the latest Man United-related news...
Fernandes told he's 'finished'
Paul Scholes believes Bruno Fernandes' Manchester United career is over and has urged the Portugal international to leave European football altogether and join the Saudi Pro League.
The 51-year-old delivered a forthright assessment on Fernandes' confrontation with Carrick. He labelled the midfielder's public comments "unforgivable" and maintained that personnel at United would never be capable of trusting him again.
"What Bruno Fernandes said last week, I think that's unforgivable," Scholes said. "How can Bruno Fernandes be trusted to be captain of any team he ever goes to now?
"I think he probably needs to get away from European football and just go to Saudi, just get out the way. I don't think any manager, any member of staff can trust him after that."
Carrick's bold Fernandes call
Michael Carrick is understood to be willing to restore Bruno Fernandes to the starting line-up this weekend following his snub against Bournemouth.
Before the setback, Fernandes had featured in every minute of United's Premier League season, making his exclusion particularly conspicuous amid the club's current turmoil.
Nevertheless, according to The Athletic, Carrick, Fernandes, and senior personnel have reached an understanding to move past the disagreement, potentially clearing the path for the midfielder to feature at Stamford Bridge.
The internal reconciliation comes after Carrick's close brush with dismissal earlier this week.
On Monday, co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Avram Glazer, and Joel Glazer held a senior-level conference call with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox to discuss the manager's position.
While Carrick was formally afforded a reprieve on Tuesday, anything less than an impressive display against Chelsea might seal his fate.
