The three-match Test series between South Africa and Australia is finely poised at 1-1, setting up a thrilling decider at Newlands in Cape Town. Australia secured a commanding 214-run victory in the opening Test in Durban before South Africa responded emphatically in Gqeberha, defeating the visitors by an innings and 31 runs to level the contest. With both teams competing near the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, the final match carries significant importance. Ahead of the series decider, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has revealed whether he would prefer to finish as the world’s top-ranked Test team or win another WTC title.

Temba Bavuma reveals his main aim for South Africa

Bavuma made his preference clear when asked to choose between reaching the summit of the Test rankings and lifting the WTC mace for a second time. The Proteas skipper backed another championship triumph, explaining that winning a major final carries a special significance that rankings alone cannot replicate.

“I think winning the final. Yeah, I definitely think winning the final,” Bavuma said during a press conference ahead of the decisive encounter against Australia.

The South African captain further explained why the experience of winning a final holds greater value for him. According to Bavuma, the occasion itself, the pressure involved and the opportunity to deliver a performance on the biggest stage make it particularly meaningful.

“There’s just a little bit more to it. Yeah, you go there; you’re at Lord’s, you’re playing. It’s a once-off game. You have to play at your best. I feel like there’s a little bit more to it than that from a sentiment point of view,” he added.

His comments underline the importance of championship success in South Africa’s ambitions, especially after the team ended a lengthy wait for a major ICC men’s trophy.

The focus of Defending WTC Champions

Bavuma’s preference carries additional weight because he is already the captain who guided South Africa to their maiden World Test Championship title. The Proteas defeated Australia by five wickets at Lord’s in June 2025, securing their first major ICC men’s trophy in 27 years.

That victory established South Africa as WTC champions, but becoming the world’s top-ranked Test side remains another target for the team. Australia currently occupy the top position with 126 rating points, while South Africa trail them on 119. New Zealand sit third with 106 points.

The narrow gap between the leading teams has added another dimension to the ongoing series, with the Cape Town Test offering South Africa an opportunity to strengthen their position. However, Bavuma’s remarks suggest that the Proteas are not allowing the rankings battle to overshadow their broader ambitions. Having experienced the demands and rewards of winning a championship final, the captain clearly values another title above numerical recognition.

Cape Town Test could shape South Africa’s WTC campaign

The Newlands decider is important for more than just the series trophy. A victory would provide South Africa with valuable momentum in the race to qualify for the 2027 WTC final, scheduled to take place at The Oval from June 9 to 13. As defending champions, the Proteas will be eager to maintain their position among the leading contenders. Winning the series against Australia would also reinforce their credentials against one of the strongest teams in Test cricket.

For Bavuma, though, the bigger picture is clear. Finishing first in the rankings would represent an impressive achievement, but winning another WTC final would give South Africa the chance to experience the ultimate reward once again.
